Topic: Float bowl screw hole needs thread repair -- Need some guidence please

One of my float bowl screws spins freely and refuses to grab.  I tried replacing it with other screws and its the same story.  Visually, the thread looks smooth. 

 I have zero experience with thread repair but my guess is that I need to buy a tap and die set and re-cut the threads, right? or is there a better way to repair this?

According to the parts manual the screw is 4 x 12...Anyone, know offhand the correct pitch for a float bowl screw on CB 550 22A carb?

If it's one of the screws in the front of the carbs that has plenty of clearance above the hole you can replace the stock screw with a slightly longer one and put a small nut on top to secure it.  I had to do that on several of the bowl screws on my 400F.

great suggestion. thanks.  im not sure if its in the front or back though, i'll check that out.
 
i guess I could just put some thread-locker on it as well but I thought that might lead to trouble.

If you search.... you'll find several methods to overcome this issue.

You'll even find a member who can successfully weld, drill and retap threads into your carb bodies that are stronger than the originals.

I did the same trick on my 650, longer bolt then a small nut on top, works better than the original.

ok sorry. normally I search before I post but Im a noob didnt realize this was such a common problem.


update:  I tried using a longer screw and bolt.  There was not enough clearence for the bolt however the longer screw did the trick anyway.  It seems that there was just enough thread left at the bottom of the hole for the longer screw; I guess the shorter screw was too short to grab onto those threads thoroughly.    either way it worked.  thanks to all.
