Clutch spring bolt torque values?
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:41:07 am »
I'm going to swap out the clutch plates on my 1981 Honda CB650, and I have no manual. What's the recommended torque value for the bolts holding the springs on?

I don't know about the torque value for your bike's clutch (probably 1,0 - 1,4 kgfm), but... if I torque the 4 spring bolts of my CB 500's clutch to the value in the manual, the heads will snap off or they'll have their necks stretched like the Karen I visited in Thailand. My advise: use your sense and forget about the torque wrench.

Crap, it appears I need a special tool?

The four bolts that attached the little push-bearing came off just fine, but now there's an odd bolt with four notches in it that is holding the clutch basket together, I guess. (I've done yamaha clutches and kawasaki clutches, and never seen a bolt like this.)

What will work to take this sucker off? Do I need to buy a special one?

You don't need to remove that nut in order to swap the plates.

What manual are you using?

I have *no* manual. But the pieces of the basket don't move, and I'm not going to force them. It appears that in order to remove the plates, I have to remove that nut.  Or so it seems.

It turns out I do have a manual for a 1980 CB650, and the clutch locknut and washer in *that* manual match what's on my bike. So, it appears I need to remove that if I want to keep going.

Dang, I'm SO wrong.

Yeah that nut holds in the clutch center.  There's a special tool for it but you can sometimes get it out with a punch or creative use of needlenose pliers.

Manuals are available in the sticky post on top of the SOHC/4 Bikes forum, here:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17788.0

Attached is an exploded diagram of the clutch.

Well, I didn't have a 15/16 socket, or anything else that might have functioned (I had gotten out the dremel and everything) so I decided to take the needlenose pliers and a channel locks route.

My needlenose pliers were nice and fat, and fit in the notches rather well. I squeezed as hard as I dared, then grasped the open jaws with the channel locks and it worked fine.  Spun it off, put on the new plates, spun it on, tightened everything up, and it appears to work.

My old clutch plates were ~.10 inch, the new clutch plates were ~.14 inch, so there was a difference, just not much.  The new ones are definitely fatter, and when I put them all together, the end result was - at least to me - "wider".

It's 10:16, and I have a toddler in bed and a wife on the way home so it's too late to take things for a test drive tonight, but tomorrow for sure! I put on a new sprocket too (1 tooth larger) so we'll see how she goes!

Thanks for the help, everyone!
