help! trans trouble in Memphis
« on: June 23, 2010, 06:51:53 PM »
Hey gang we're in the midst of our x country tour on our cb500 and are suddenly having trans problems.  I don't seem to have a first or fifth gear. +nly 2nd and 3rd are working and running along in 3rd, the bike will fall into neutral.  I know the 500s have seen shifting problems. 5oes it sound like something I can fix or am I f#*ked? Hope this post makes sense; I'm writing ferom our phone!
Thanks,

When you are coming to a stop, do you downshift through the gears clutch in - 4th - clutch out - clutch in 3rd - clutch out - clutch in  - 2nd - clutch out - clutch in - 1st or are you going through all the gears down while holding the clutch in trying to get into first?

Also, is your clutch cable and clutch adjusted properly?

I always shift down through every gear using the ctlutch each time.  As for the cable and adjuster, they have been working fine but the adjuster is acting wierd.  Doesn't seem to be very smooth when I tighten it.  But the clutch seems to be disengaging properly and I think I've got the cable right.

Is one method better than the other?  I do a combo of both of those.

Scott,
What do you mean by shift linkage and detent?  The shifter   comes straight out of the case right? I guess I can take the side cover off and have a look at the clutch adjuster. Its wierd not an inkling of shifting trouble after 2000 miles and now this,

If you're still in Memphis and can't fix it yourself and are looking for a shop....let me recommend Fletcher Cycle Service. Mr. Fletcher is an old time factory trained Honda mechanic and, I think, extremely knowledgeable. Also, a really nice guy. Located at 2436 Airways Blvd. Phone: 901-743-6948

I mean the linkage behind the left side cover where the shift shaft comes out. It doesn't sound like a clutch problem to me.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  Here's what I did: Well actually here's what I had done.  Mike I took your advice and went to Fletcher's.  I nursed the bike along the higways in third gear, scary!  But when I got there Mr. Fletcher felt the shifter and figured out that it was a shifting problem and not a transmission problem.  He said that he could machine the parts if needed, by which I think he meant shift forks.
When he finished he called and told me that the bolt holding some part of the shift drum had loosened and come off and that it was a good thing we stopped riding.  So Scott I think you were right about the linkage, but I didn't realized you could get to all that from behind the clutch.
The other problem is that I contracted food poisoning while in Memphis and so I haven't been in a position to work on it myself.
The repair wasn't cheap but Fletcher knew what he was doing and got it done quickly for us.  Great shop for anyone who doesn't know!
Thanks again, we're back on the road.  After (finally) visiting Sun Studios we're off to the Ozarks!

JB,
I'm glad your bad experience had a good outcome. Yes, trying to ride a 'sick' bike along I-240 could be a really scary trip. Mr. Fletcher is not cheap, but I believe he is fair and he is the best I have ever had experience with. What he doesn't know about bikes probably isn't worth knowing. Sorry you got sick on Memphis food.

Glad to hear you are back on the road, JB! Man, broken bike, fouled bowel at the same time! I've had both, but not simultaneously! Hope the rest of the trip is better!
