oil leak help k1 750
« on: June 25, 2010, 09:14:49 PM »
hey guys got my engine back in my bike and ran it about 12 times no issues ran great. did a oil change over filled it a bit and now it seems to have a oil leak coming out the left side of the head. it wont leak untill the bike warms up. now my question is should i see if it will go away which it probally wont or pull the motor back out again. and if i pull it should i pull the jugs back off again and replace the base gasket and the head gasket? need some advice what to do i hate to pull it out again. that and i was also thinking since it would be out maybe putting a slightly bigger cam in it? but of course dont know what kind of gain i would see without head work done. its a k1 750 with k&n pods jetted with a header. any help would be great thanx ryan

Have not been following your bike but what did you do to it when it was out before?? Make sure your oil leak is actually the head first and not a tach cable fitting etc. Your 71 cam if original is a good cam for your motor so save your money for awhile and see if you can button that thing up and see how she runs.Go for a cam if you do some pistons and head work maybe. If its been apart recently your base gasket should be OK if you leave the jugs on.Did you change the pucks and head gasket last time???

ya the engine ran great before i did my build just gaskets were weaping so i pulled the top end off all new base and headgasket, valve cover. i replaced the pucks in the head and the head was sent out for valve guide knerl becvause they were letting oil by. now i put it back togeather it runs really good but once she warms up a bit it starts to drip alot out the left side of the motor looked like a base gasket but idk if its coming from the head or not. i dont have a tach cable in it right now? never seemed to be leaking up there no oil at the valve cover it seems. thanks for the adivse for the cam eventually i want to build a motor for it but right now shes pretty stock with 35k on her.
i might try and take a vid of it leaking if i can see what u guys think need to make a move fast cause i got a bike ride coming up my first :)

Well, at least send a snapshot of the leaking site?

The K1 is certainly one of the stronger engines, but those pods are cutting down your HP. Try and find a good stock airbox instead, and install a K&N filter inside, and you'll pick up some power above 6500 RPM, for sure. The flat spot around 2000-3500 will also go away. If this is your first 750, you probably don't even know that you're HAVING a flat spot, but with those pods, you definitely are...  ;)

Instead of a cam, consider going to one or two steps oversize on the pistons. The 750 engine picks up almost 10% more HP (about 5-7 HP total) for doing this one little thing. Most mild cams won't do that much, and they cost a lot.  :)

so im tearing into the bike today had to take the washer out of the front forks beacuase my bearing stack was way to high. after getting the header and the forks off seems like i have some leaking around the valve cover. i had just replaced it after the build because i tore the new one i put it last. the whole front of the engine is covered with oil so its hard to tell im hoping its just that valve cover gasket. its my first honda 750 and my first build so im learning as i go. ya the bike was a half cafe when i bought it and rebuilt the whole bike it had emgo pods on it which ran bad so i bought some k&n old stock of ebay for cheap they seem to run ok once i moved the needle one spot and put the jet up. but once i get some miles on it i will start looking for a box. thanx for the help guys. ill get pics soon after i get her running a get it to leak again. i did find a spot of the valve cover leaking between the two center plugs. the got that is covered up by the top cover.
