1974 CB550: Project Doppleganger: E3MC NYC Build #002
« on: June 28, 2010, 04:07:13 PM »
I posted a thread over the winter about my 1976 CB550 that I rebuilt on a rather modest budget in my NYC apt: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=62368.0 Thought I'd post some shots of the latest project I've been working on...

I got commissioned to build another 550 for a local guy who loved my bike and have been going round the clock the last few weeks on the project. I had 3/4 of a bike in left over parts from my project and hunted down a semi complete but ugly 74 CB550 up north in decent shape with only 8000 miles. I didn't document this build as well as I'd have liked but did manage to grab some crappy cell phone shots along the way. Thought I'd share a few shots of the latest build.

Here's a pic of the current lineup. My 76 CB550, The Project Bike, and my "new" 88 NT650.

And a mock up with my spare tank fitted. The owner to be asked for drag bars as he didn't like the fwd position of the clipons.

The front end bearings and fork seals were toast on the new bike so I pulled the front end to get to work...

New Fork seals and fluid/Headlight Mounts Installed:

Dunlop K70's Fitted and she's back rolling:

New Shocks and 4into1 Exhaust:

First day out:

I stayed with the stock intake system as all the components were in perfect shape. Cleaned the carbs, new air filter, adjusted the valves, set the timing, new plugs- and wow. Starts on one kick and runs like a beast throughout the entire range :o

My 76CB550 for reference. Gonna have a whole crew of raw metal bare bones 550's riding around lower Manhattan soon enough...

I'm heading back down tonight to put in a few more hours and am hoping to have everything finished up on this bike within the next day or two. On a side note, I scored a set of Lesters for my 76' 550 that I'm in the process of refinishing. Just picked up new K70's, wheel bearings, and tubes and should have them on the bike soon enough. I also found a really cool seat I'm in modding to work that's going to look insane when it's done. Here's a sneak preview.

Bikes look awesome! great job!

2 questions for you:
1. What do you do, clearcoat the bare metal?
2. What tail light is that? I have something similar but it could be brighter. Yours looks to have more LEDs.

Edit.....oh yeah, sweet NT650! Love those bikes.

I've also got an nt650 next to a cb550 with mags, but I haven't lived in manhattan for a few years. Great bike(s).
'75 cb400f, '77 cb550f , CB160 road racer, '88 Hawk GT track bike, FZR400 race bike, and a bunch of old hondas in boxes.
