So my gas tank had a bubble in the paint and I had to send it back.  And now the painter is holding it ransom for more money.  So...the thing isn't on the road yet.  UGGGGGHHHH!!

Anyway...in the meantime...the seat is getting upholstery and I am installing a few finishing touches...

Wait a minute. The painter messed up the paint, and he is making you pay to fix it? That is very uncool!

basically, the original work order stated that he would fix a leak in the tank.  It had a leak because the tank had to be modified to fit my cb750 frame.  I pointed out this pin hole leak in the area where I smoothed the weld bead a little too thin... and we agreed he would fix/patch it before painting.  On two following instances, I called to follow up and make sure the hole had been patched before painting.  I was told it had been patched.

5 minutes after putting gas in it for the first time...the bubble appeared in the exact spot I had told him to fix.  This leads me to believe that no effort had been made to patch the leak or it would have held up for...an hour...a day...a week..something.   But it presented a problem immediately...obvious to me they neglected to ever patch it at all.

He won't answer the question if he ever attempted to patched it at all.  He is just demanding $150 for his welder to patch it now.  Mind you...its a pin hole...$150 is off the charts expensive, to boot.  I had the whole thing cut, fabbed and rewelded for less than that.

my wife is a soooo pissed.  she didn't tell me she was going to...but she went over to his shop and laid into him...she's 6 months pregnant and intolerant of BS...

He's a friend of the family AND I already paid him $500 when I thought the job was done.  So if  I go get it...I lose the $500 and have to disassemble the bike to take all the parts to a new painter...start over...   He's a d!ck and knows this...

So I scored a sweet pair of old Harley rims (both 2.5 X 18) from Hoosier Tom.  Thanks, Tom!!

The part # in case anyone wants it...

But FINALLY!!  After re-angling the nipple holes for the rear rim, powder coat and lacing up a fresh set of Buchanan spokes...here you go!  Next up is a set of Coker - 2" White Wall - 400 tires...gonna be SICK!

White wall tires!!!! What is wrong with you??? :o

I really like what you did with the front turn signals !

I've got a legit question (bike is amazing by the way).

I have one of those nice drop center wheels as well going onto a custom disk brake rear hub.  The wheel was obviously made for a drum brake, so I would need to angle the spokes in to meet up with the smaller diameter disk hub.  Did you just re-drill them and then use spoke washers?  I haven't dug into this too far, but since you did the exact same thing, I thought I'd ask!

Beautiful bike, and I hope all works out with the painter.  That's just a crap situation.

I took them to Buchanan's and they re-angled the rear hoop for $15.  I'd recommend you go this route cuz they have CAD systems that precisely bore out the nipples to the new hub.  The money is worth saving the headache of doing it yourself...or potentially dogging up your rim.

At buchanan's they just entered my hub model and the hoop model...and bam!  The machine did its business in minutes...

Hello gentlemen!  I'm finally starting this thread after a year of starts and stops, successes and failures...delays...

Anyway...last year I bought (for way too much money) a '71 CB750 Cafe.  I bought it on FeeBay out of state...

But I knew I'd make some changes here and there, nothing major.  But boy was I WRONG...!!  After it was delivered from 1500 Miles away I noticed something that was UNACCEPTABLE.  What you can't see in the pics is that the red frame has PURPLE METAL FLAKE in it.  I'd even go so far as to say it was GLITTER.  Needless to say I just spent $2000 on a bike I now had to tear down.

Commence tear down...

Sold the tank and the tail...

Sold the chrome airbox...

Sold the gauges...

The old exhaust was just UGLY!!  Got in a USED 4 into 2 exhaust...  (I like the look better)

They cleaned up...good as new!!  Easy-off oven cleaner and steel wool...works miracles.

Then I get the bright idea (from a fellow forum member) to lengthen the swing arm.  Goodbye stock swingarm...hello 1980 DOHC CB750 Swingarm!!

I mocked it up with a stock tank and new cafe tail.  Just to get a feel for where it was headed.

Then I realized I hated the stock oil tank.  And if the oil tank had to go...so did the electrical.  So I shaved the tabs and chopped the rear A-frame cross brace.  Then I mocked it up again.

A year or more of starts, stops, delays etc, that is normal on ANY worthwhile project.

I have had projects that took 5 years or more.

Also the way I see it is another CB750 engine, frame etc., were saved from the scrap industry.
I know the manufacturers would rather have you buy one of the new all electronic ,aluminum framed, very expensive bikes that require a IBM computer to tune up (MAC users FU) but instead you saved a simple rugged motorcycle that has lasted 33 years and has a transverse four cylinder engine.
Now we will see if one of those modern bikes will last 33 years. That is if anyone has that much money to buy one.

A lot of great work!
But I hope that you do not really go with the white wall tires. LOL

I just do not understand the whitewall thing. LOL
Cars back in the 50's had white walls (everyone thought those people were weird back then too), but the motorcycles did not have white walls.

Some people thought they were cool, back in the 70's you could buy white wall adapters... a three inch wide rubber insert you put between the rim and the tire, for that wide whitewall effect. Hugely popular with the lowrider crowd.
