Ceramic coating on a gas tank?
« on: July 06, 2010, 01:21:19 PM »
Anybody ever tried it?
Depending on the coating the finish can look like either polished or bead blasted AL. Either would look pretty good on a tank and it would likely withstand a lot more abuse than paint.

well i'm sure it'd be a cool thing, but i doubt your tank liner would survive, and also, the surface would have to be PERFECT, or else it would show through on the finished product...

Also, those finishes are vulnerable to solvents, like brake fluid...and gas.

I have ceramic coated lots of stuff cant see why it cant be done I would make sure the tank is flawless get it soda blasted and prep it as someone said "perfect" and coat and buff it would be very durable and definitely fuel resistant. They also have black/white but paint would be cheaper and easier than ceramic. Cermachrome is sweet you heat the part and spray it on with a spray gun water based dries on like clay and melts when fired at 550 degrees for almost an hour. It will look awful before polishing it with aluminum polish of better buffing it.

Hmm...Interesting.  I've gotten that warning from a few different ceramic coaters, too.  I got nothing.

Along with the other coments, the tank would have to be perfect and you'd have to use stock emblems. No bondo, won't stand up to the baking.

you could weld in the emblem indentations or use a lead filler, but i doubt the lead would hold up to the baking process either, as they bake it pretty dang hot i believe!  don't they make a shiny chrome looking powder coat?  that would probably be a better bet...

yes they do. Still have the baking issues though. Powder is baked too.

As the metal work has to be flawless for ceramic coating to look perfect, and your going to all the trouble to get it that way, why not just have it chromed, ala BSA style?  Probably a lot more durable.  Anyone ever see a ding in ceramic coating?  Chrome may dent, but doesn't chip or flake.

I've seen a header pipe coated in the polished aluminum looking ceramic coating pounded flat with a ball peen without cracking or flaking.

It was from a local shop though.  Not HPC or Jet Hot.
