Back in 1970 or so, I mounted a pair of Sears air horns on my crash bar. One is 8 inches the other 6. Sears sold them as boat horns. A small air compressor is mounted under the battery box which operates off a relay under the left side cover. Believe me when you blow these people look for the semi....perfect!  ;D Other then having to put a few drops of oil in every year or so they have worked perfectly for 40 years now.

terry: AS with headlights, horns can really benefit from a relay kit.

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Horn_Kits/horn_kits.html

You probably know that, but I'll take the opportunity to expound. If one gets a high output conventional horn, and wire in a relay, you'll compete with airhorns for volume.

Oh I just noticed you mentioned "relay" in your post, so we're on board. A relay will make even a stock horn much louder.

Thanks Ron, I ordered the relay kit from Eastern Beaver and a pair of chrome Stebel horns locally (the horns were cheaper than the relay kit, surprisingy) so it won't be long before my bike is as loud as I am! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My brother had one, it's loud but not as loud as it could be for the money.
I farted and made my son cry.

Crap!  38 bucks for a relay, a fuse and some wires?!  I think I spent about 5 bucks for a relay and already had the fuse, wires, and connections in my tool chest.

Loud pipes saving lives is the Harley fallacy.  Loud pipes are loud behind the bike.  Most of the people who scare me are coming at me from the front or sides.

If you're on a Honda, get a loud horn and be hyper vigelant.  MSF classes and riding for pleasure (aka when/where it's safe.  I may be one of the lucky ones, I commuted on a bike way back in the mid 80's to early 90's.  Now I only ride my bike for pleasure, and that means avoiding the slab (I40 and I95 for me).  And I avoid peak hours.  If I want to ride, I wake up early and get out of the populated area quickly.
Cheers!
and Ride Safe.

Well I'll ignore the Harley bashing from the "Harley Phobes" here, but anyway, I received the quieter baffles for my Jardine "Big Boss" exhaust for my Triumph Rocket III last week, so I've fitted them, (much quieter now, but still a rorty note when you give it the berries) and my 136 Db chrome Stebel dual horns and the wiring loom from Beaver arrived this week, so I'll install them this weekend after I finish Brian's remote oil filter set-up for his 550. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

i used to have a repackable"answer"muffler on an early it 250,different kettle of fish for sure, but every two months ide put new "pink batts"glass wool and the thing would run better for sure, two strokes are an exhaust dependant engine though ,it ran real doggy with the muffler removed.(to prove to a mate!)

That's quite right Dave, when i was a wee lad of 15 or 16, I bought a CZ 250 Motocrosser (well, they were called "Scramble" bikes back then) and with it's low slung expansion chamber and "stinger", my Dad (who wasn't a bike fan) would yell at me to "turn that bloody thing off", so I decided to quieten it down.

My Dad was/is an avid photographer, and back in those days rolls of film came in aluminum cannisters, and by chance, the can was a tight fit over the end of my stinger. I punched some holes in the end and it wasn't bad, then I stuffed some shredded "pink bat" bits in the end, and it was quiet.

I pushed it up to the old Bairnsdale racecourse where we were "kind of" allowed to ride our bikes without too much interference from the cops. Not having ridden it further than around my back yard, I was concious that this weapon of a bike was attracting some attention from the other kids, so I went for the big power takeoff...... and stalled it. Tried again, stalled again, bugger!

The previous owner, Ralph, wandered over and asked me what was wrong? He then noticed the "end baffle" I'd made, and told me to "take that fukking thing off", which I did. I then fired it up, and (to make up for my previous embarrassing performance) gave it the berries, dumped the clutch.......... and flipped it! Oh well, I did learn a valuable lesson about motorcycle exhaust theory and practise! ;D
