CB 650 grinding noise from starter
« on: July 20, 2010, 03:22:30 PM »
Most of the time the starter makes a grinding noise, when I try to start the engine. A few times the starter will turn the engine, but most of the times it just makes a horrible noise. I've tried with an other starter, but with the same results.

Can anybody tell me how to fix the problem?

Kind regards
Per Hansen

I had this problem on my parts bike. We tried swapping in a starter motor that works fine, and still had the same problem. At that point we gave up as we figured it was a stripped gear inside the engine. We came to this conclusion as the problem got worse the more we tried to use the starter.

Read up on the starter clutch.  From what I understand, it's not uncommon with the 650s.  Mine had been replaced by the PO shortly before I bought it - and that was with only 7K on the clock.  I have a spare one off of ebay that I'm keeping around just in case.

Sounds like the starter clutch.   Here is a topik on the 650 site.

I did work on a bike with a bad one and we kept sppraying wd 40 in the starter hole. Seemed to help but not cure it.

I think you can get the starter clutch out thru the bottom with the oil pan off, worth a try anyway

Really?  Wow...that'd be a lot easier than the clymer manual made it seem.  I'll have to look into that, should mine ever go again.

Seems to be an echo in here.   ;D ;D ;D Glad you had a link - I kinda had to do a fly-by posting last night and never had a chance to get back here and find one.

Personally have not had that problem in all the 650's I have repaired or currently own.

It's GREAT to know there are instructions for an easy repair compared to having to split the case apart!!

I have only delt with 2 650's that needed it done.  One I aquired and its still waiting the other was one I was helping out with and he sold it before we got to it.  Was sounding better doing the wd 40 thing.
