New member! pictures of bikes included....
« on: July 26, 2010, 07:41:55 AM »
Good morning all,

Just thought I'd pop in and introduce myself as you'll probably be seeing a lot of me around here as of now.

I'm 26 years old, and never really been into bikes all that much. Wrenched on old cars with my dad for a long time though, so that is where my interest has always been....until I met my beautiful wife! She's always liked bikes, particularly 70's vintage bikes. So I thought I'd surprise her with a bike for our 2 year anniversary this year, so the hunt began!

Anyway, long story short, I wound up with way more than I initially went out looking for!

Attached is a picture of the deal that I couldn't refuse! I intended on buying one bike for my wife, and wound up with three and a half (one parts bike).

Here they are all packed into my little old garage:

in the front is a '75 cb 400.

middle is a '78 cb 550.

and in the back is a '74 cb 750.

All of the bikes run. The cb 550 is gorgeous. The cb 400 runs really nice....just needs a couple parts. I can't wait to get that one roadworthy. And the guy I bought the bikes from said the cb 750 ran awesome last year, as he had it registered and drove it, but he parked it after it had a few electric gremlins....so i'll try and chase those down.

parts bike is a '70 cb 750. On top of that, I have boxes, and boxes of spare parts....it'll take me awhile to go through it all to figure out what I all have. All in all, pretty excited...have something new to wrench on and throw money towards!

So here I am, a garage full of old Honda's later....I just ask that you be patient with me, as I have no idea what i'm doing!! I'll start with tearing down the 400 first, and finish that one into a nice driver for my wife. I'll leave the 550 as is for the time being, then get the 750 up and running after that.

Anyway, I'm really excited to get started on this. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome...sounds like you have a great wife there. She knows her bikes too. Will she get her knuckles dirty? Looks like a great find there. Have fun with them.

Welcome. The only thing better than a wife who understands your interest in bikes, is a wife who actually likes them.  ;) Congratulations on your find.

She will definitely be getting her knuckles dirty! I told her one of the stipulations of her getting a bike was that she had to learn how to work on it by herself. We plan on tearing down her 400 and making it into a nice looking driver, and I'll make sure she turn the wrench as many times as I do...

Thanks! I just couldn't say no to the price...granted, I hadn't done a whole lot of shopping around, but I don't think I would've found anything for this price again.

Sounds like you scored both ways!

Chiqs on bikes are HOT!

What are your plans with the bikes, besides getting them in good running order?
Like cafe, stock, etc.
Oh and welcome aboard.

Still not totally sure. Leaning more towards the stock side, however, probably do something a little different than stock colours....

This actually leads me to my next question. Since I come from more of a classic car background, the purists tend to hate overly modified vehicles....are Honda CB owners similar? or do they welcome modifications on bikes?

No one was ever banned for moding a bike here. There a numerous modified bikes. Besides, it's your   bike, do as you like and share the result.  ;)

Welcome - and what a great wife! Wow, three nice Hondas, you did great!! Mind if we ask how much?

You will see all types of bikes here, from stock [like mine] to wild choppers and everything in between.

As long as it is done right, we will like it. [Just don't take a Sandcast and chop it!]

Good luck.

If you mod a Sandcast, you might get flamed.
If you mod a really super clean one of these, you might get flamed.
And if you can't fit your truck under the bank teller window, you might be a redneck.

If you bring one back from its evident grave, you may be praised.  Almost no matter what you do, even if it is not liked very well.

The purists are everywhere, even when not an actual purist, it can come out, lol.

From what I see, you will be just fine.

Check out the BOTM's, you will find some great ideas there as well as the build threads.

No?? Didn't think so.
You watch, as soon as that biological clock starts ticking, it'll go from "ooohh what a lovely machine, darling!!" to "get that great big dirty, greasy heap of shyte outa our garage; I need to some space to put all the stuff we bought from 'Toyz r Us'" :D :D

You are correct on the no kids part....i'm taking advantage of this while I can! Thankfully I have a wife who likes to park the car on the street, and not in the garage anyway...so that works in my favour!  ;D

welcome and good luck. thanks for the compliments on my bike(in your pm).

I also have a good sized 'no-car' garage.  ;)

my girl rides as well and wants a 70's cb350-4 to go with her ninja250. we have no kids either, just bikes.

a kid or a bike, not too different. both take all your time and money until you end up selling em off or wrecking em. but I might be wrong, never had a kid. if I did have one, I'd prob try and take him apart and upgrade some stuff for speed and looks, end up with a dead kid or a frankenstein's monster. so I'll stick to bikes and cats.

you should see my cat's dyno chart... the nitrous in her food is really paying off.  ;D

Way to jump in with both feet!  We're a pretty tolerant crowd around here, there's a thread here called "cutting up classics" that'll pretty much give you an idea of most of our opinions about mods. Looks like you have some choice pieces to start with. Welcome, and post more pics....

bike or kids...bike or kids...for now, i'll go with the bikes!  ;D

The CB 400 will be my wife's, I just have to get it running right. It starts, and runs with the choke on for a little while and then dies...won't run without the choke on. I'll take a look at the carbs this weekend.

I definitely jumped into this with both feet...oh well, I can think of worse things to spend my money on though. Seems like a cool bunch here so far....I think I'll be hanging around here quite a bit! And i'll take all the bikes out of the garage this weekend and snap some pictures to put up.

Nice start. I like too keep 3 running bikes also!Im down to 2 but am starting on a 77 750f for a friend. I have both Bikes and Kids! If I could only gum up my Kids carbs just a little on command. Dont put off the kid thing! I wish I had done it earlier! Would of saved us from lots of bad habits!!! She will want her toys to haul kids and that means a convertible!!Like this one so it has its upside!

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

there's definitely some cool people here. this site is the best thing on the internet as far as I can tell. you will get tons of help. from people who disapprove of cutting up classics and from people who cut 1st, think later. everyone's pretty cool, here. even the guys that are dicks are entertaining and/or helpful. we all love the same thing so we all have common ground. you found the right place.
