Engine VIN location
« on: July 28, 2010, 09:13:12 am »
I need help on where to find my Engine VIN. Not where to find out about it but where it actually is on the engine itself.

Yep.  There should be a rectangular box on top of the engine case underneath the carbs where the engine number is stamped.  Sometimes if the cases have been replaced the box will be blank.

apparently I have one of those bikes that has the bare rectangle.  :-\ is there another way to figure out what year model it is. I am specifically looking for friction plates. I know my carbs aren't '77 carbs which is what the bike is titled as. I realize that doesnt mean anything except that if it is a 77 motor then they arent the original carbs. (apparently) Are there any other identifying marks?

yes, give me a second and I'll take some pics. Is there anything particular you would like to see?

Also, it is on an AMEN chopper frame. Not sure if you were wanting to see color scheme, brakes, or some other distinguishing characteristic of the frame or tins.

Shots from the sides of the engine should be enough.  I'm not intimately familiar with all years of the 750, but if it's one I don't know that well, somebody else will.

If you see 4 round pins between the head fins..viewed from the side.. its 72 or earlier.
If you see 3 that are more rectangular with rounded ends (about 3/8 long).. its 73 or later..
Top cylinder fin is different too..

Just to be sure, the number would be in the marked box... the pic kinda looks like there is something there.

there is a box there. Its about a 1" x 3" rectangle. There isnt anything stamped in it. I took some scotch brite to it and shined it up thinking it might be painted over, but there isnt anything there. I have heard about this before like if a chain comes off and slaps a hole in the case and they had to get a new half. I guess it was up to the original owner to re-stamp the VIN back in. In several cases the number was never re punched.

Probably a 73 or 74 .

75 and up, and some 74's,  have shift pattern cast into shifter cover..thanks to the Safety Nazis... >:(

Altho some folks change them to the smooth one.. cleaner looking..

Does my K1 have a later model shifter cover on it?  Mine has the shift pattern on it.

Yeah, I would say its changed.

Often chromers did an exchange program, and you can end up with other year parts.

My 73 CB750 I got in 76 has blank cases, still got them in my shop. PO said he broke a chain, and had THE VERY PRICEY SHOP RECIEPT for the work & parts to re & re the cases.. seems to me they were 6 or 700 bux..

Thanks for the info. :)  It turns out, at least cosmetically, my K1 is somewhat of a frankenbike.  I learned from Hondaman when we met a few years ago that my kick-start lever is from an F model, and now I know my shifter cover is from a later model as well.
