Went for a quick COLD ride today
« on: February 22, 2006, 07:41:10 PM »
Finally got my new helmet, so figured I would fire up the bike and take her for a ride today.  Nice chilly ride to break in the new helmet and jacket.  I think it was about 30-35F, wish I would have had gloves, only rode for like 20 minutes, but man was it cold.  Is it ever going to warm up?

Well just thought I would sahre the fun  :P

Why protect your head, if your daft enough not to wear gloves, I remember my instructor tell me that hitting the tarmac at 20mph was like gabbing a grinding wheel, and you wouldn't do that now would you  :D

Brock, if you insist on riding at these temps, wear gloves and keep your legs together to give the little guys a break.  :)

I went for one of those freezing rides the other day myself (27 degrees). I did have gloves, leather with Thinsulate lining, but my hands were still frozen. Does anyone have a suggestion on good cold weather riding gloves ?

Thanks,

? could be but if you are really into getting a ride in during the winter you should do a search for the thread about heated grips - it went on for a while and a lot of products got hashed out...

non heated gloves arent really good at all for winter riding due to the fact the wind gets between the fingers, wear mittens.

When I was a kid, my dad had some three-fingered gloves he wore when riding during the Winter.  Called them his "nose picking gloves". :D  I've been thinking about getting some.  Seems they would keep your fingers warmer than regular gloves but still allow you the use of your index finger for things like opening your visor and working the choke lever and idle screw.  They looked something like these:

I've been riding my thirty miles to work on days that are at least in the high 20's in the morning and middle to high 40's by the ride home, as long as there is no rain or snow in the forcast.  I wear two pair of thinsulate gloves, one over the other.  This seems to be sufficent in the morning, my hands are cold, but not painfully numb by the time I reach work.  Lot's of layers of clothing helps.

I took my scoot out for a little ride today , ended up being around the block a few times ;D.
Temp's in the lower 30's is just a bit cold for me, plus I wasn't really dressed for the weather.

Spring will be here soon enough...

I've been thinking of getting some sheepskin with wool still on and making something like "hippo hands".

Problem is I recently lost my decent gloves.  I was not out for very long, they were pretty cold by the time I got home.  Maybe I can find an old pair to keep the frost off the fingers today and go for another ride.  (just figures last Friday it got up to mid 40's, and I had to be stuck at work...)
