Dunstall CB750 info
« on: February 24, 2006, 08:12:10 PM »
I recently purchased a 1972 CB750 with a Paul Dunstall Racing conversion. The conversion consists of a stationary fairing, clip-on bars, fiberglass tank, seat/rear body section, rear set controls, and 4 into 2 header system. The bike was wrecked early in its life and suffered minor damage, (broken fairing which is missing except for mounts, and points cover) and was apparently then put into storage as it has done only 4014 miles. My question is can anyone provide any background history on the Dunstall conversions for Japanese bikes. I have spent a lot of time stomping around on the net and have found very little information. The Dunstall conversions on Nortons are fairly well known and documented but information on the UJM's is hard to find. I've seen information suggesting that kits were made for Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. I found one pic on a web site, that was of the cover of a Dunstall sales brochure, of a bike that had the same body work as mine. I have found pics of a few bikes on cafe' racer websites of bikes with the same tank but different rear body work. The body work on my bike looks like that on the Nortons, the other pics I've seen look like the CR750 in the seat and tail. I've been told (by the guy that sold me the bike) that the kits could be bought piecemeal and that bikes that had the complete kit installed were very rare. Do any of the old timers have any knowledge that they would care to share?

Original dunstall kits were seperate Glassfibre tank and seat assembly whilst the later ones were a one piece tank cover and seat assembly due to the UK legal minds getting paranoid about "plastic" fuel tanks.Fitted up several after accidents as the cost  of the conversion was less than the original replacements
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Google "glass from the past". Last time I looked, they have excellent Dunstall fairings that could be fitted, I'm sure.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

That's a great first post Mr Superbiker!  Welcome by the way.

Where are you in UK? Maybe you could be a bit more specific in your bio!

If you are near W London, we need to meet up for beer/chat/beer/ride/beer (you get the picture?)

Also, put a link to your gallery in your signature - it makes it easier for us to go look.

HI Steve - I am new to this stuff. Been meaning to post on the forum for ages.....

Hopefully my signature has the gallery link now. I'm in the Midlands by the way. Glad you like the post. If the Gallery allowed more pics I would put some pics of before I started - what a mess it was 2 years ago!

That is really one good looking bike!! I've admired the Paul Dunstall conversions since their
beginning. I was awestruck by the Nortons and no less by the Hondas. And as stated by the
others, Welcome to the site!       Later on, Bill

Dunstall was still in Buss a couple years ago and had a website up and running. Some spares were still available like footpeg rubbers ect.

        Hey Superbiker,

Thanks for posting those pictures of your bike. I kinda followed the Paul Dunstall stuff, starting with the Nortons, and lost track after about 69' or 70'. Cool to see this stuff in such good shape. Your bike is Totally Awesome.

                                                           Later on, Bill :) ;)

Thanks Carpy ;)

Your gauge faces are superb - they put a picture of these in the index of the mag!
When I got the piece in the VJMC mag I made sure you got a mention too ;)

Your old Dunstall - more original than mine - spurred me on to phase II of my project - will post pictures to the forum as soon as I get a few more bits sorted.

Are you looking for the angular CB750 Dunstall fairing or the smooth Norton Dunstall fairing?  I have a NOS red Dunstall CB750 fairing.  Let me know if you are interested.
