400f engine. Too far gone??

Hi All,

A couple of years back I bought a CB400f off of eBay.  It was in Melbourne – I had it shipped over to me in Perth.  It required a thorough recommissioning – including an engine rebuild to, in part, correct a sheared cam chain adjuster bolt.  The rebuild/recommissioning took a few months, but I did most of it myself and let’s just say I now know a lot more about the bike than I ever thought I would !  And this is a good thing!  And this site was absolutely fundamental in providing me with the confidence and knowledge to undertake the task. 

I’ve since put quite a few thousand miles on the bike and just really, really enjoy riding it.

Then a while back I picked up a rolling wreck.







Assorted bits – some belonging to the 400, others from other models.

 I’m still considering what to do with this.  Rebuild?  Break and store?   The bike had been involved in an accident; the PO had started collecting parts for a rebuild before giving up.  It is still missing various bits and pieces.

I’ve started a dismantle and inspection.  Once I’ve worked out its condition then I’ll make a call on what to do with it.

The rear left engine mount had taken a hit in the accident.  The PO had a go at welding it up.  Looks pretty crude to me.  Opinions? Advice?   I think I’d want it to be a little better than this.

Wear or damage to the cam?

Gear selector mechanism.  Tidy, except the PO has used some red silicon gasket goo around the place.



Damage?  Oil pump side.



Once it was open it was quite pretty.  No random bit of metal, no shards or lumps – all reasonably clean.

However, I’m not experienced enough to make a judgement on some of these issues, and would appreciate some advice.   Should I continue the rebuild, or is this one just too far gone?

how are the gear vheels..they are often pitted..klik on pic...to make it bigger

Hi Stryboen,

Thanks for the reponse.

The gear wheels dont have the pitting that is shown in your photograph.  Several gears have a notch out of them. 

 

Damage or a design feature?!

I'm going to press ahead with this engine rebuild/bike build, and do the best job that I can with it.

think it from fabrikation..some of mine have that same..no problems....
i vill try to find a doner engine to fix the gearbox...the bike ha´ve run 100,000 km´´ábaut 65.000 miles..it is not posible to find some under 75,000 km in europa,,and they are rusty and broke
i kan not speak english/but trying!!
