'78 CB750K Cafe Project
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:08:26 PM »
Picked up this bike a couple years ago, and I'm finally getting around to working on it.  I'm starting this thread to help keep me motivated and to help with tracking my progress.  This project will be a learning process for me, so I'll probably have a few questions if I can't find it anywhere else on the forum.  Thanks in advance  ;D  Here's a few pics from today.

-Not sure if I'm going to use this exhaust or not, might keep the stock exhaust.

rear fender and turn signals are removed, cleaned up and painted the battery box...Started cutting the rear of the frame so I can start working on the seat.  Hopefully I'll get some sketches posted of what I would like it to look like, I got a pair of '59 caddy taillights I might use for it.

Have fun. The 78 I have is a nice ride and it was a great experience learning about it through my build.

Welcome. This is the place to find out anything you need to know about your bike. I would stick with that stock exhaust. It looks clean.

Let me just say now, If you dont decide to use the orginal exhaust, let me know. I've got a couple 78's I've been restoring to stock.

Good luck on your build. Will be watching.

Nothing too interestng going on yet, still in the tear down phase.  I removed the exhaust today, a bunch of rust fell out of them and they rattle like a can of spray paint.  I like the way they look so I think I'm going to set them aside and work on them after the rest of the bike is done.  Also removed the wiring harness.  Hopefully I can get everything taken apart this weekend.  I'll post some more pics after I get some more work done on it.

I've been super busy with work and family stuff lately, but I was finally able to get some more work done on the bike.   I was able to get the motor out of the frame.  Now I can start going throught the motor and cleaning up the rest of the bike.  I'll get some pics of the  progress posted, although it's nothing that hasn't been seen before.

Here's some pics that show where I am right now.   After wrestling with trying to get the head off, I just went ahead and took the whole top off.  Everything's pretty well blackened, so I'll start cleaning things off and figuring out what needs replaced now.  Oh and continue to try and separate the head from the cylinders.   :)

Lookin good so far! I am slightly ahead of you on my build but not by much. Just remember to tag your parts. It can get overwhelming real quick with bolts nuts and washers, for me anyway! Tons of pics help to. Looking forward to watching your progress!

Looking good so far!!  Have fun with the project, and use the forum as there is so much help out there.

Can't wait to see another Cafe K8!

If you are going to go with rearset, there are a limited selection of bolt on kits for the K8, so maybe look to a custom job.  I did and it was cheaper than buying a bolt on kit, but just think it through before you finish painting or powdercoating the frame.

Best of luck!!

Wow...it's been a couple days or so since I updated this thread.  It was a busy winter season at work and little progress was made.  I managed to get the top end done and the engine cleaned up and painted.
