Shock Absorbers
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:19:15 pm »
I've been running Koni's for most of my CB750 years. There's gotta be a better shock after all these years - or has the clevis screwed us out of any further development? No chance of Ohlins, darn it...or is there?

You can find deals on the Ohlins for less than $500 if you look around a bit.

Koni is now called IKON and still as best tested in a german classic magazine on a CB900F Bol d 'Or.
Far ahead of Ohlins , WP and others expensive brands.
For street purpose this is the best and cheapest choice.

Ohlins makes a shock with a clevis bottom that fits CB750K models?

The HO140's are a bit longer than stock, so if you're looking for a stock length replacement, these are going to raise your rear end a bit.

What's the approximate difference in length? If all it requires is to go with a softer spring, no worries...

The fitment chart above lists the O shock length at 14.3".  Not sure what the CB750 stock shock length is, I think it's 13" or maybe 13.5".

The manual (thanks for the thread) says you need to fit a weaker spring to the HO140 to bring the useable length of the shock down to stock (or near-stock) length. 13.5" wouldn't be a real problem, whereas 14.3 would be a bit much - anyone know which is the correct spring for this approximate length, i.e. I would indeed consider fitting a set of shocks almost equal in book value to the vehicle fitted....?

Well, going to buy my shocks somewhere in EU, but I can't seem to find any dealers or specific models which will fit the SOHC on this brand.

Just a quick tip on the YSS's:  I had to get a couple of 5mm longer bolts for the bottom clevis.  This part is thicker on the YSS shocks so the stock bolts barely catch any threads.  Other than that, no clearance issues or anything.

You may not want to use spring weight to control ride height, it won't handle right.

A shorter spring of the proper weight could work. But when it reaches full extension it won't have any preload on the spring, unless you've shimmed it up.

Lots of problems, best to find the right shock length to begin with, IMO

The Ohlins folks tell me that they modify the HO140's for proper length, but don't say for how much. That'd be the way I'd go, but does anyone have an edge on a place selling them at a good price?

Thanks Turboguzzi - will check them out- they do look really nice indeed - I talked to one of the wrenchmonkey boys who used it on one of their builds and he loved them. but guess that was for street use

Hey Phil,

Is not that hard, can do it yourself. If not let me know.
Have you spoken to Graeme (Croz) last weekend?

Cheers mate,

Yeah, nice off-topic, but again - does anyone have a handle on decently priced HO140's?
