Piece of SH!TE covers. Good brand?
« on: March 01, 2006, 01:48:43 PM »
the 350 retired its cozy cover about a year ago to the 400f and received a new one... since then, they have both fallen victim to the elements.  in fact, i came home this afternoon to find the 350 cover shredded!  (the one on the 400f has been shredded for some time now)  and, unless "baby" is trying to break out of her egg and hatch into a bigger sohc... i'd like to keep her undercover.

any suggestions on a nice quality cover (economical of course) for my itsy bitsy one?

Cheapie covers won't stand up to sun and wind for long.  I have a Dow cover that is now 12 years old and is still in good shape.  I use it at work.  Here in the Boise area I can ride to work most of the year, so it has gotten plenty of exposure to the elements.  So far it has cost me 5 bucks a year.  Looks like it has a few more years left in it,  Actually, there is no sign of any deterioration.

Have you gone to a tarp shop and seen if they can custom make a cover? might be a little on the $ side but it should last quite some time.

the cover over the bike to the left is a "prema" ... it's on indefinite loan from pop.  it's holding its own pretty well.

i really just wanted to get people's opinions of quality... uh oh... Zenmares!

I owned my CB for 30 years and stowed it in the garage each winter without covering it. I finally broke down and bought a decent Nelson-Rigg cover - $50. So far (4 years), so good. Bungees and eyelets, vents - a pretty nice cover, but recommended Large size a bit too small for CB750. I bought it here http://www.recleisure.com/ not too far from home.

Cover Not At All recommended for long term outdoor use by me, but do you wanna hear about the new roof on my garage? No leaks over the CB.

Judging by the picture at the start of this thread, I'm assuming the inquiry is about a cover suitable for parking/storing a bike out in the weather. Can't offer much there since I don't even take the bike out in a sprinkle if I can help it. However, if the bike is garaged, I can recommend using a good cotton cover, even a heavy cotton painter's drop cloth will do. It keeps the dust/dirt off but allows air circulation. I found out through accidental  neglect  >:(. Mine sat covered this way in a detached, unheated garage for 22 years and held up pretty well. Needed a good cleaning for sure, but very little other deterioration.

yes... exactly what shredded the cover.  was riding in it (only have 2 wheels ya know)... gawd that sucked!

the wind just rips thru the canyon!  my cabin is even nestled into the side of the mountain and it still gets battered.

Make sure the cover gets tight enough. A loose cover over the bike and the wind will rub your paint off in a matter of weeks. You want a breathable cover. I have several for indoor use, made out of nylon -much better than PVC) with vents on the handlebars.

How about making a big crate and putting the bikes inside? Plenty of Sillica Gel bags will keep the moisture out of the way. You can even make the crate in such a way that during season all the walls detach and you can store the boards in almost anywhere.

I aquired a hondaline cover years ago.   Works good but getting old.  Dont know what they cost.
With honda on the side most likely too much.   Went up 93 the otherday with about 10 deg left lean.

I have several dozen bikes and none of the standard cycle covers survived more than a year in a hot Las Vegas outside weather. Then I realized that a cheap white bedsheet covers lasts several years as long as you keep it away when engine and exhausts are hot. I use the wooden clothline pins that I got from 99 cents store to trim the covers for tighter fit. Since then, I haven't bought another cycle cover.

thats interesting ted... i wonder if the same would hold true for rocky mountain winters vs. your vegas sun.

i've wanted to build some sort of garage/shed for myself but, i rent.  where i live is "built out"... meaning, no new construction.

What about rain? Or, do you get so little of it in Vegas you don't have to worry about it?

You could invest in a enclosed trailer.   Or build a portable shed.

I just put a tarp on top of it when the rain is heavy but most cases I had no problem. For a long storage, I remove the seats for safe keeping. Unfortunately, unless if you have a good wooden shed, you can't fight against high winds, no matter how tight your covers are.
