Starting to take form...




The painter suggested putting black vinyl on the knee dents.  He said rubbing on the flat paint surface will make it shine more.


It's almost ready to be fired up!  I just took the seat pan to the upholster's...might be a month or more before they complete it.

Gas is leaking from one of the tank welds.  Agh!  I contacted legendary motorcycles about the leak.  They're supposed to send me tank liner.  I'm not happy about this.  :(

That's BS.  You should send them back the tank for a proper tig weld. Don't they pressure test their finished tanks before sanding and polishing??  I would insist on it.

Except his tank is now painted, so welding is out of the question without a re-paint. Pretty disappointing they sold a tank that wasn't pressure tested, but lining it with Caswell will be fine as a remedy. (Don't let them send you RedKote, Caswell or Por-15 only).

Thanks for the replies fellas.  I'm pretty upset about it.  The first told me to send it back.  I told them I was fine with that but it had just been painted.  I cannot afford to get it repainted.  I would be ok if the welds were on the underside of the tank and it ruined the paint there.  Once I told them it was painted they immediately suggested the liner.  I hear stories of that liner stuff flaking off.  Seems like a nightmare.  I'm so over budget on this...most of it is my own fault...I can't eat another paint job.

Another rant....
I've called 3 times and emailed twice.  Cheryl at Legendary insisted that she will send me the liner but I feel like i'm getting the shaft.  She they moved shops and they're behind.  I guess I'll call again next week.

Properly installed, a Caswell liner will not flake off. It's a 2-part epoxy and cures tough as nails. In fact, removing it is a labor of frustration, chemical warfare, and a fools errand. Trust me, I spent 3 months soaking and rinsing and soaking in some very nasty Chems to get one out recently.

Since I've found out that my tank is leaking, I've called Legendary one time each week for 4 weeks now.  Each time I spoke with Cheryl.  Each time Cheryl said they'd send me the liner if I sent her an email with my address.  After hanging up, I've sent the email.  It's to the point now I just forward my last email to her. 

I feel I'm already letting them off the hook for using the tank liner instead of fixing the weld.  Now I feel like I'm begging them to send me the liner.  Sheesh.  Can't be that hard to send out liner, can it!?

I'll probably update this thread next week with more complaining instead of progress...

The problem with so many off the shelf "liner" kits is that they don't mix well with ethanol fuel. Some will last but most will fail and you end up redoing it.

I called again today and Cheryl actually remembered me this time.  She's shipping  RedKote.  I know that's not recommended and she agreed that it's probably not the best for fiberglass and steel but she said it works really well with aluminum.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.  Take her word for it or just buy the Caswell liner.

Just buy Caswell. Tell them to keep the RedKote and use it in their tanks. Line it and be done with it/them.

I have had Redkote fail with pumpgas on a metal tank.  I would also recommend Caswell.

The tank I got from them years ago had redkote already in it when I got it.  It dissolved in the gas almost immediately. Lucky for me, the welds in mine didn't leak.

Ok, they finally shipped me RedKote.  It was an open can that might be leftover?  Anyway, since all of you recommended the Caswell, I think I'm going to go with that.

That's it. I go to the Auto Paint store regularly and grab a few extra "mixing cups". I then portion the Caswell (1:2 Part A:B) by using the measuring lines on the cups. This way, I apply half the product at a time. Certainly the 10 Gal. mix is far more than you need, so I'd definitely mix 2:4 oz at a time, basically cutting the portions into 1/4s.

This way, you can focus on applying the sealer to specific areas (I do the top ((underside)) first). I let that stand for at least 8 hours, then focus on the backbone portion. Then finally the side panels. By reducing the components to multiple portions, you won't have any run-off needed to be drained through the petcock. It takes a little bit longer, but it absolutely guarantees full coverage.

You will find the sealer cures hard as a rock, and should be glossy clear when done. Before you use the entire mixture, water test the tank by filling it and check for seeping, weeping, or sweating. I have used Food Coloring in the water to aide in spotting any seepage with bare metal tanks. (Or you could use Baby Powder/Flour along the seams).

Then finally the side panels. By reducing the components to multiple portions, you won't have any run-off needed to be drained through the petcock. It takes a little bit longer, but it absolutely guarantees full coverage.

You will find the sealer cures hard as a rock, and should be glossy clear when done. Before you use the entire mixture, water test the tank by filling it and check for seeping, weeping, or sweating. I have used Food Coloring in the water to aide in spotting any seepage with bare metal tanks. (Or you could use Baby Powder/Flour along the seams).

It's been awhile since my last update.  Legendary finally sent me 1/2 container of RedKote to fix the leaky weld.  Thanks to the comments above,  Caswell was used instead.  Leak has yet to be water tested...stay tuned.

Speaking of leaks, the carbs had a leak and they were sent to Cycle X for a cleaning, synch, and new jets to match my velocity stacks and 4 to 1 exhaust.  I forget the gentleman's name from Cycle X but he called me once he received them.  He then gave me a complete rundown of what he was doing to them.  He gave me the warm and fuzz feeling that Legendary never did :)

Anyway, the seat pan was at the upholstery shop for a couple of months...maybe even 3.  Since it wasn't needed, who cared!?  LOL.  Anyway, when I called, I think the shop owner was a lil embarrassed (I think he forgot about it actually) and he had it ready in a week...with a discount.  So I was happy.  Came out pretty good!






Hope to have the carbs back in a week or so and 02z06dave can finally get this thing out of his garage.  Can't thank him enough!!!
