I have the Carpy exhaust on mine.  tried the stock jets (105) went up to 115 and it runs like a top.

I'll keep this in mind when I'm tuning!  Thanks.

A lot of guys think that a café racer means putting pod filters on the carbs.  Don't do it, keep the stock airbox.
I hate the stock airbox.  I'm definitely not keeping this.  I'm gonna try velocity stacks first.  Someone better than me should be able to tune it.

If you are intent on doing the café conversion there are a couple of things you need to get right.  If you want clubman bars or clip-ons you have to put rear sets also. If you don't it will be miserable trying to ride it.
I am going with the clip ons with new rearsets.

Also, keep the front fender.  Cut it down if you want but it does provide some rigidity to the front end and it will also keep the crap from the road from flying up at you.

So far the fender is out.  I bought a fork brace to stabilize it.  But, i might consider the smaller front fender...thanks!

Don't under any circumstances go hack stuff off of the frame until you know exactly what you want to do with the bike.
do your research on all the parts you want and count the cost.  You can spend a lot of money and still end up with a piece of crap.

Frame is hacked up...so too late for this advice.  Dave has experience so I think we hacked off the correct items.  And i'm very concerned about ending up with a piece of crap.  That's why i'm in no hurry to finish this project.  it can take another year, as long as it's fantastic when it's done.

One thing you should do is change all the wheel bearings, swing arm bushings and steering stem bearings.  I recommend All Balls.

This part is complete.  Well, the wheel bearings arent but swing arm was completed and steering stem bearings too.

Thanks for you input...this is good advice for sure.  Much appreciated!

Dave and I worked on the bike this weekend.

We figured out where and how we'd mount the gas tank.  We started to install the seat the hoop...but we ran out of time.   We also installed the fork ears that were purchased from MotoLanna.  They're pretty awesome. Shipping was a bit much, but they were still cheaper than buying the Joker Machine ones...a lot cheaper.

Another thing we worked on was the oil can.  Purchased this from Cognito.  They provide mounting hardware.  We thought we'd make some metal tabs that would be welded to the frame.  The tabs came out nicely.  We decided to get them welded by someone who is better than us at welding :)

Here are some pics with it mounted with the hardware from Cognito.  We mounted to get it centered to measure for the tabs that we fabricated.

Piston rings came.  Just about time to start on the top end.

The hoop we got from Cognito is really long...which is nice because it give you some room to make sure you get the fit you want.  Well, we cut it down and got it mounted

I think it fits perfectly with the seat.  I'm pretty happy with how this came out.

Welding will be done in a couple of days.

I got the bike back from the welder.  I'm pretty pleased with the results.  I wish I had the tools and knowledge to do this myself.

Anyway here's a pic of the hoop that got mounted...

This pic doesnt do it it justice so maybe i'll post other another later.  It's on straight and level.  Dave had these metal inserts that were inserted in to both the frame and the hoop.  The welder just had to do his thing.

The oil tank tabs were also welded on.  Dave and I fabricated some that we wanted tacked on.  He said they were "race worthy" and not "life time worthy".  (Race worthy - saved weight but would probably not last more than 6 races - said the welder) So, he made thicker ones for me and welded them on.  These were more finished and thicker than the ones we came up with.

We were concerned that the tank wouldnt be centered, but he nailed it.  Very happy with the installation.

Next up is the mounting the seat pan...that might not be done for another week or two.

Well, it's been a while since I updated this thread....

Round 1 of powder coating is complete.  Here's what was coated...
Frame
Swingarm
Forks
Calipers
Rotors
Frame kit
Rear Brake stay
Oil Can
Rear Set brackets
Fork Brace
Battery tray

I'm sure i'm forgetting a few pieces.

Round 2 is at the coater's now.  Forgot engine mount brackets.
All was done in gloss black.

The engine has been painted and assembled.

I order another $400 in parts today...it never ends.

Tonight, hopefully, the engine gets mounted in the frame...without any damage to the fresh paint job.

I like the olds school cast finned covers.  I'm not sure how well they contrast with the CNC'd Joker tappet covers but I like the overall engine paint/polish scheme.

Thanks guys!  We got the engine in without scratching anything!  Woo hoo!  The frame kit made it much easier than when we took it out.

We also got the swing arm and front end on.

Excellent build!!! I dig the color combo on engine.

Who makes your rear sets and how do they mount on your '78? I have a '78 as well and figure i'll need some since i'm running clubmans (or soon to be clip ons potentially).

I recently had my bike tuned with a Carpy Pipe and Pods and my shop complained about the pods.  He taped the hell out of them to get them to run half decent but i'm thinking I'll be going back to the factory air box sooner or later.

Where did you buy your smaller gauges? Really looking forward to how your bike will turn out.

I'm nervous about this thing running properly with pods.  Fingers are crossed.

I got the smaller gauges on Dime City site.

I got the rearset mounts from Cognito for $75.  Rearsets from Slipstream Cycle Works, LLC for $237

Front end is coming together with dual disc conversion.

Ordered brake lines and banjo bolts.  Still need to decide on a front brake master cylinder to support the two calipers.

Brake lines and banjo bolts came in.  Didnt realize the triple tree has built in pass-thru for brake lines.  Each line connects directly to lower tree...should keep things really clean.  Ordered longer brake lines again and a 90 degree banjo bolt.

In other news, Dave cut up an old front fender and got it installed.

I found a painter and got the tank, seat, fender, and headlight bucket (not pictured) painted.  Got one sneak preview of the parts today...

I went with a flat red (1 of like 756 reds to choose from...sheesh) and a flat black stripe

What do you all think?

They're still painting the headlight bucket.  Once they're done with that I'll get some pics on the bike.

I love the look of this bike.  I can't wait to see it with the tank and seat on and running.

Really nice work.
