Thinking of getting a modern literbike...and it's not a Honda!
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:47:47 PM »
I would dearly love a new CBR1000RR, but not in the colors they offer for the U.S. market.

So I am really looking at getting this; The BMW Super 1K Road Rash! a.k.a. the S1000RR.

Get a CBR1000RR that is a couple of years old.  They changed to the latest body style in 08' and had a more reasonable line up of colors. If your going to get it from a dealer you might not get totally reemed if one has been sitting on the floor for a while. Still gonna be a lot tho...  ;D

The way I look at it is that if you are going with these kind of bikes you might as well go with the BMW. Everyone seems to be impressed with it.

Gonzo, get whatever color and one of these

;D

Just kidding.   ;D

I started a thread like this a while back.  I ended up getting a Honda CBR 600RR.  I'm very happy with it, although I still think riding the old bikes is cooler.  You can't really go wrong, but I got to say, I kind of like the Honda color schemes you posted above.

Well, I have been doing some soul searching, and after having gone back to honda's site, I see the linked ABS model is a model T, any color you want as long as it's black.

But for 3K more, I get the BMW with more performance and features.

Why did the wife have to give me permission to get a modern bike?!?!?! :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

The BMW would be a great choice. I'd look at an Aprilia RSV4 also, although a little more $$$.

try an rr before you decide to buy one , they are proper uncomfortable !  they make a great race bike but are a bit too focused to make a good road bike . there have been some reliability issues with the race bikes [ super stock and evo bikes ] here in the uk .i think they are reliable enough on the road though

I'd get the black CB and buy your wife a $5000 present with the money saved and the lower annual operating cost. I can't ride either bike to their maximum anyhow.

The S1000RR is the best bike. That said, very few of us can ride a modern liter bike to its full potential. I'd love to have either, but the S1000RR has re written the book on sport bikes. If I were looking for a bike, I would be looking at older bikes like the 900RR or the TL1000R(a lot less $$$ too). Something with style and plenty of power, and you'll stand out from all the idiots on brand new crotch rockets. My 2 cents...

+1 - The CBR is a better all rounder, more comfortable and will probbaly be the better handling...

Got my first Liter Bike,  a new 07 ZX-10R,  and LOVED IT.

Really,  really tough to keep it within legal limits--even twice legal limits.  Amazingly tough to keep the front wheel on the ground.

And I have never been stopped so often by LEO before owning the ZX.  Even though I ride fully geared,  cops would pull me over and run my numbers at any provocation.  Never got a citation (I think their mood changed when I popped my helmet off,  and they see a guy about their Dad's age...).

I'd get the Honda--not too trusting of the BMWs reliability,  at least as compared to the Honda.

Have fun--the modern plastic liter bikes are absolute RIOTS!

if you really want the fastest best handling race rep on the road forget the bmw and the aprilia , wait until after christmas and buy the new zx10 [ i know someone who has ridden one and he recons they are another step on from current superbikes ]
if you want the best road bike buy the honda , there has never been a bad fireblade .

Took a test ride on both yesterday. The BMW dealer just took a photocopy of my license and said to be back in an hour and don't wreck it!
The Honda dealer took a refundable $500 dollar deposit, sent someone out with me, and only gave me 15 minutes! The CBR is a nice, well built bike, but killed my wrists...in 15 minutes! The BMW fit me like a glove, and only made my wrists ache a little, and not until the end of the hour. The BMW was light years away from the Honda in handling and feel, and power. I just felt safer and more comfortable on the BMW. It was more settled in the corners and with the switchable power modes a joy to ride. The Honda was just buzzy and frenetic feeling.
So I got my money back, went to the BMW dealer, and put down a deposit on the S1000RR. My 2011 Thunder Gray/Black one is on a boat heading to New Jersey from Germany.

Now to keep my K8 and F2 from getting jealous! Maybe new tires, girls like new rings!

Nice buy. I wish ;)

I enjoyed the test ride story.  Seems someone knew you were a man of distinction ;)

I watched that last Jay video. I don't keep current on new bikes, but that one seems like the best of the best.

Well done mate, the new BMW schidts all over the competition by a mile, and from my experience owning BMW's for the last 20 years or so, I can say that their after sales service also schidts all over the competition, as your personal experience with your Honda dealers test ride story attests.

I wouldn't worry about reliability either, if BMW builds a faulty component, they'll replace it with a good one, and you won't be out of pocket. I even had a rear MC replaced a couple of years after the recall period, free of charge!

Finally BMW has thrown off it's conservative "Two Wheeled Car" status and has used the technology that they've always had, to build a bike that hands Japan's bike makers their asses on a plate. It'll be interesting to watch the Japanese manufacturers scramble to avoid a BMW Blitzkrieg of their niche market! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
