cb 175 anyone here have one?
« on: September 22, 2010, 03:25:18 PM »
I found a pretty good deal on a mostly complete bike and I am thinking on pulling the trigger? But, would like to here the plusses and minuses on owning one. I am prolly gonna cafe the thing since it is far from mint, a few  problems it does have is a sheared off kick start >:( >:(,the owner painted the rims and spokes  >:( but motor is free, carbs are in tact. Im making the road trip this weekend any pointers on what to look for would be appreciated.Thx

I have three 175's. Two are SL175 and one is a CL175 race bike. Nice little bike to put around on. Parts are easy to find.

To repair the kick start you will probably open the motor. May as well go through the whole motor at that point.

I had a CL 175..that I rode for about a year (back when it was new).  A nice little twin..but IMHO..not worth much more than a short jaunt errand bike.  It's very underpowered..not much better than a Honda Cub..in my estimation.  And forget much 2-up riding..as it simply doesn't have the guts to haul around that much weight.  I simply got tired of mine..traded up to a CB 450 (which does have enough power)..and can be ridden for reasonably longer distances..I felt..

Worked on many back in the 70's, reliable and easy to work on.  And an excellent bike to learn to ride or wrench.  Top notch short commuter.  Enjoy

Agree...mainly a city bike for short jaunts. The CL175 was the first new Honda I ever owned back in the early 70's. I think mine was a 1972. Great gas mileage. If you are close to 6ft. you may feel cramped after an hour of straight riding unless you are in your teens like I was back then. I moved up to a new 450 as I needed to be able to get on the highway with it.

I have had 3 cb550's and 1 cb750. I thought about doing a complete cafe on one from clip-ons and rear sets to a fiberglass seat pan. Just something to do this winter, and hopefully get my 4 year old  son out in the garage with me.  He LOVES motorcycles, and was saddened when I sold my 550 this past summer.I have seen them cafed' and the look pretty darn cool. I kinda thought they would be underpowered which would be kinda cool to go rippin down the back roads out here ;D

I have a set of Motobit rear sets on my 175. Easy install and made for the 175.

There's a good Yahoo Groups, group for the CB175 /CL, etc.
They are knowledgeable and a good resource.

The CB175 had a 20 bhp output when new and was capable of 75mph for average riders...
I considered buying one before I bought my CB550 project bike.

http://www.motorera.com/honda  has a good detail sheet on the cb175 if you look up the 175cc displacement...
http://www.motorera.com/honda/h0175/sport175/sport175.htm

The Yahoo group has a more detailed history of the 175 and it's evolution...

It would be a perfect commuter bike for a moderately sized city as the gas mileage would be good.
