Bike Title problems. Any Advice?
« on: September 30, 2010, 06:26:07 PM »
This afternoon I went to buy an old bike, but the title was FUBAR. Signed in the wrong spot by the last guy and not notarized. Never got registered between the last 2 owners so i guess the 3rd guy up the ladder owns it technically. Any ideas on how to get this lined out so i can buy this thing?

Search the forums.  Title issues have been discussed quite often.  But, yeah, it varies pretty widely state to state.

Some states, like FL, would require ALL of 'em (the guy who's name is on the title PLUS whoever's signatures are on there) to come in and two ALL the transfers - A to B, B to C, C to you...  And pay for it each time.  In other words, you'd be screwed.

Other states don't have any provisions AT ALL.

Other states are pretty lenient or have non-burdensome requirements.

Good luck, but anymore, for me here in FL, non-titled bikes are only bought if I need the parts...

I had a similar thing happen with a car I bought a few years back (title signed in the wrong place, PO was totally MIA).  It pays to have friends with notary endorsements :D

I had a post here a while back about a guy on ebay providing "Broadway/ITS like" service out of Utah.  Cost was $125 when I checked last.  As mentioned, it varies but in certain states (like Florida), you're screwed.  I have no problem using these services to get over on them...

Here is a method. ::)
#1 have a police officer do a VIN check, where they come to the bike and verify the odometer and VIN. (dowload papers before you call) - free
#2 It costs around $5 to have the DMV do a vehicle history search (you mail them a vehicle history photocopy request)
#3 Write up a vehicle history that has as much information as possible - B.S. between the lines to make it sound good - Dont say 'I got it from a guy down the road that got it from another guy....- names and addresses
#4 get all the vehicle history notarized- your bank might do it for free- some insurance agents do it for $5
#5 write up a bill of sale - if you can contact the last registered owner have them sign it- a bill of sale with a name that doesnt appear in the history of the vehicle is worthless- your state wants its tax $$$
#6 go to the registry with the RMV1 form and get that title
