Where do i start?
« on: October 06, 2010, 10:01:16 am »
Sooooo.... now that i have my free 76 750 (see link below if really interested, nothing special though) i need to find out if it even runs before i go tearing #$%* apart. can i fire it up with out an exhaust system? not going to ride it or anything, just want to see how far i need to take this. basically i want to find out why this was sitting in the mission with a free sign on it. should i just order a gasket set and start yanking her apart? im just not to sure where to begin, she turns over, carbs are amazingly clean, but thats about as far as ive gotten...
so where do i begin?

Best not to run the engine with no pipes.  I would bower some pipes, change the oil and filter, rig up a temporary fuel container and start it up.

While it's not good to run the bike with no pipes if it were me I'd still fire it up for a couple seconds. There's just something about hearing it run.

If it sat for a long time a lot of guys will pull the tappet adjuster plugs on the top of the valve cover and run some oil in all the holes. It will help lubricate the upper end which is probably very dry from sitting. Best to do that before you start it rather than have it run while the oil takes time to get to that area.

sweet this is the advice i need, compression check came up good, think im going to change the oil, add gas and a battery and see what happens. not going to ride it, not even gonna gas it... just want to make sure i dont hear any obvious nasty noises... then ill tear it apart ;D

I'd suspect you would have a hard time hearing any nasty engine noises if you run it without any mufflers.  You're right though, hearing it run for the first time is a definite motivation.

BTW, congrats on this weekend.  I read your post on another forum.  ;)
