Ahaha.... yes....It's my favourite bird gun!...  It's a lot more fun with a lil' .22 than with a shotgun.  Always aim for the head....if they're a lot further and it's an iffy head shot.....I aim for the base of the neck above the breast.  It's nice because you'll never find a bb/pellet while you're eating them... and you can shoot them from quite a distance.

Here's a pic of my wife with her first ever ruffed grouse...using the single shot .22 Cooey we refurbished together. (she prefer's the open sights over a scope cause she's crazy like that... :D)

My hat's off to both you and your wife. The cover here sucks for Pats, often shared with woodcock and so dense you have to fight your way through with briar proof pants. I would never have considered a .22. I'm assuming you're NOT talking about on-the-wing shots, otherwise you are a far better shot than I.  ;) I use an old LeFever side-by-side for both Pats and Woodcock. Great fun, Pats flushing still startle the hell out of me.  ;D
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Nice!! and thanks... I want to get into some wing shooting for some woodcock! Have a good buddy with a dog that's into that... but I would like an over/under 20 GA...or sidebyside for that.

As for wing shooting with the .22... Only ONCE while way out in the nowhere lands....and the bird required a second shot on the ground because it was only wounded with my mid-flight shot.  (that's what's nice about the semi-auto Ruger...Bang' Bang! ahah)

But most of the time we see them and can shoot them before they fly.... or they fly into a tree and "think" you don't see them...and sometimes...they fly too far and are just gone.   We try to stick to the "edges" of the dense bush...they seem to like that at feeding time.

Cheers!

At one time I was looking for an old .22/.410 double gun for grouse, I would see lots of them critters while out road hun... er, 'scouting by vehical' during deer season when I lived in Washington. Don't know why I never got one.  :o  The gun that is.  ;D
I shot plenty with .357 birdshot loads from my revolver, but you DO need to be up close or they sometimes jump up and fly away.  ??? My lab (who would be sacked out on my sleeping bag all morning back at camp - imagine that) would get really pissed when that happened.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
