bmw Z3 crap out
« on: October 13, 2010, 04:44:24 AM »
Well my z3 crapped out on me last night.  I think the engine blew.  Oil light comes on and an ominous rumbling from deep in the bowels begins.  Thumping and just damn.  180,000 miles.  put in new tranny 6 months ago.  should I fix it or junk it?

I'd look for another motor to drop in it. [Did this years ago to my Firebird convertible.]
Would cost a lot to have it rebuilt.

It's a tiny little 4. My friend Catherine has one, it's a cute little girl car! And no longer manufactured.

Eh, I have a little Del Sol and I like it so I told myself if I blew the engine on my truck or my Del Sol I would just buy a rebuilt engine and probably install it myself.
Cheaper than most of the other alternatives- I would probably upgrade to a gen5 Acura Vtec though.  :)

As long as the car is in decent mechanical shape- brakes, lights, frame- keep it running if you like it.

Put a Nissan sr20 or Honda f20c in and call it good. If you need to go a bit cheaper snag a ka24de out of a 240 and slap a supercharger of the frontier/xterra on it.

Hmmmmm..... The 4 cylinders are scarce, and it would be a lot of work to convert to 6. Is the rest of the car in good shape? Worth the money and time?

From a cost/benefit standpoint, sbc might be the way to go

I say you strap an inline 736 inline four Honda motor in there.

That would show your dedication.  :)

Good deal! That 1.9 isn't a bad powerplant. I think it was better in the earlier 1.8 version found in
the 1991 318s. But that aside, I liked the way the 1.8 made power in the upper revs.
Good luck.

Replacing with another 1.9?  My father has a '97 with a 2.8, it's a rocket go kart.

It's not really a blown engine untill you see your pistons in your rearview mirror. Maybe it's not as bad as you think, and a repair may be possible?

Sucks huh? I blew up two engines completely since februari, and one turbo too. So i'm buying my 3rd car this year, not fun. I'm kinda starting to think the cars are not the problem, but it's me doing something wrong... Maybe cars are just not for me.
