Started a new job, got some cool drills at work..

Take a guess.. how long it takes to drill a 1 3/4 inch hole thru 3/4 mild steel plate..? from when druill touches, to when it breaks through and clear, and finishes hole on other side..

Still faster... :o

Should mention I was drilling with external coolant on a 59 year old mill, the newer one has coolant thru the spindle & drill, and is even faster..

I'm by no means a Master machinist, but I know it takes real horse-power to remove that much steel, that fast, coolant or not. 7.5 spindle HP?

They are taking about 9 or 10  seconds on  the old Cinncinati, chip are not really blue.  that was a 1.81inch hole..
On the newer mill, they are blue and going through in around 7 seconds.. :o

I think both have around 25 hp or better... :o

They are called U drills.. not sure of make or cost but am thinking they are 3-600 bux.. well worth it, they are fast, look like these would dril 4 or 5 inches deep..

The inserts look like a triangle, that is humped out a bit in the middle. One near the center, one on the outside.
1 shot thru, a thin disc pops out the bottom..

2 chips, like a normal drill, but the flutes are straight. You dont want to get hot bu the chips, I will wear a faceshield next time..got one on my pantleg, all of a sudden it felt warm.. lol..

We got a big lathe in there.. 4 ft swing.. :o

I had a magnetic base BUX drill and could drill a 1" thick bridge beam with a 3/4" bit in 25 seconds, it had a spring loaded center point that would eject the core out the back. I was always worried about the generator coughing or the cord pulling out, we were drilling the web about 50 feet in the air.

The Last Spindle and Gearbox I designed as part of a Monarch PMC V 750 would deliver 30 Horse power at the spindle nose rated continuous power was 10 at 100 RPM. The full 30 HP was reached at 250 RPM.

For shorter periods the system developed 50 HP.

The spindle operating range was 20 to 8000 rpm The 50 Taper spindle spun on a combination of ball and roller bearings. the roller bearings ran with retainers We developed to replace the stock plastic roller bearing retainers. We carefully controlled the rolling element contact points and had the steel retainers plated with nickle and silver.

We could drive a 3 1/2", carbide insert, spade drill through steel making chips the size of your thumbnail.

At 8000 rpm we could run a 1 1/2" into a block of aluminum removing in excess of 200 cubic inches a minute.

We would make people jump away at machine tool shows when the chips would hit the windows on the first high power cut.

The bean counters in the company pissed me off, I left and built homes for 10 years. The Monarch company now resides in the corner of an old Smith Corona typewriter facility doing service on the old machines, they employ about 10 people.

Thanks for the memories... ::)

Don R , are you using Rotobroach/ZSlugger cutters ? & how do you catch the slug?

Well today I got to use the big lathe.. not a 48 inch as I said, but 44 inch.. but probably 48 if you are turning a plate or collar.
It is a TOS lathe, big brute, I chucked up a couple rectangular plates and bored./ chamfered a hole, in them. Had about a 30 inch 4 jaw on it, had to reverse jaws, think they weigh as much as my Southbend whole chuck weighs.. :o. Its a bit of a change to run a lathe with the ways at knee level.. :)
