Topic: 350 twin, Alternator question

Hey guys I have a quick question about my CL350.  I was wondering, should I have engine oil in the alternator housing?  I have noticed when I take the cover off to do the timing I have some (not a Lot) of oil in there, maybe a bit over a table spoon I'd say.  Also I noticed that I seem to have an oil leak on the left side of the engine, and it appears to come from the big alternator housing gasket.

I have checked a few micro fitches, and they don't seem to show a seal of any sort.  Just that the bearings seem to come to the edge of the cases.  So what do I have going on?  Is there a seal there?  Or is the alternator supposed to have some oil in it and do I simply have a gasket that needs replaced?

Any info is always greatly appreciated.

There is supposed to bw oil in there with a paper gasket between the big case and crankcase and another between outer cover and big cover, also from memory "O" rings under the outer cover screw heads

That's what I needed to know.  I guess the large paper gasket is what's leaking, as I have done all but the drive sproket seal under the sproket cover.  I guess now it's time to scare up a new gasket and fix that nasty leak.

yes always a little bit of oil in there Travis but not much. It always made for a fun dau trying to time up the race ignition with the cover off for strobing and running at 5000 rpm - lots of oil spray unless the bike was well laid over on its side!

I can only imange the mess!  I cleaned everything up yesterday, and forgot to check it when I got home.  It developed a new problem, which has me confused.  On my way home it "blipped" so I figured I was out of gas switched to reserve, but it still kept surging on me.  And when I came to a stop it just dies, but will immediately restart, but not idle.  I'm guessing it's a fuel issue, but have not had a chance to check it out yet.
