Is it just the pics or does this chrome look bad?
« on: October 18, 2010, 03:20:47 PM »
These are on the page for cyclex chrome exchange.  Most of the chrome looks pitted, scratched and dull on these pics.

Just wondering what y'all think.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I've had a look at those before and they didn't really inspire me that much although the last picture of the head cover with the Assassin Spikes looks to have a lot better quality finish.

Comparing that cover with the unspiked cover, there certainly looks to be quite a difference in finish quality although the photos are taken in a different light situation.

I agree that some of those do look a bit dodgy.

Hard chroming covers is something that I've thought about and was curious if anyone has had this done before.

As a photographer, I'd argue that it's very difficult to get good pictures of chrome.  The reason is simple.  Good chrome should give you a reflection of something (including... possibly the camera that's taking the picture).  You're not seeing the chrome in a picture.  Rather, you're seeing the reflection.  You can discern shape but if it's good chrome, you're seeing a reflection.  To make things more complex, you may be seeing chrome which is in the depth of field yet a reflection of something that is not within the depth of field (not in focus).

Photographers pull their hair out trying to showcase chrome.  When you look at chrome live, it is a dynamic view.  As your eye, the subject or perspective moves.. or the light changes... so changes the reflection you see.  It's easy to appreciate it's beauty when you or the chrome subject is/are moving.  To really appreciate chrome, it needs to be seen live.  Try to think of nice pictures of chrome.  I sure can't think of many.  When you do see nice pictures, there's either modifications to the picture (PhotoShop) or backdrops, white tents, fancy lights, etc. involved.

I'm not saying CycleX's chrome is nice or not.  I suspect they do nice work based on my visits to their shop.

I can totally see what you mean Gamma.  If you make another visit to cyclex, can you take a look?

This cover looks like it has a lot of tiny pits and scratches.

The next time I'll be there is May 2011 (da Northwoods fishing and biking adventure with my brothers).  I will check out their stuff when I go.  In case you haven't been there, it is quite a "trip" to be there.  Ken is one incredible character.  Among the nicest people you'll ever meet but has a knife edge part of his personality that you know demands high quality and artistic value.  You get the feeling that the money part of the deal is a necessary but inconvenient part of what's going on.  He wants you to be happy and he wants to be happy with his work and products.

I have purchased items from him in the past and I have had no issues with quality.  I have seen his work on his site and can see his quality. which is what surprised me with the pictures.

I like to visit his site because it is all over the place and I can get lost in it and loving it at the same time. He curses on it now, lol.

I am not in hurry for anything, I was on one of my cruises through his site again.

So, that would be great of you stopping by, if the time permits, when you are out that way.

I wasn't trying to be negative of his stuff, it caught me off guard.

As far as aluminum goes, I prefer the look of polished over chromed.

As a fellow photographer I can confirm chrome is not an easy thing to photograph. Ken just has snapshots up on his site and a lot of the stuff looks like there is still some wipe marks on some parts. The shots may not do the parts justice but they certainly don't look their best in these images.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

I decided to have mine chromed for this project and some turned out good and others not so much. This tranny and stator cover came out great though. Really low maintenance and looks great. If the chromer screws it up, you can't really fix it other than strip it and try again though. I've found if you do as good a polishing job yourself as you can ahead of time, the chrome results are usually better.

mycb is correct. Nice chrome requires excellent prep. Any imperfection will always be obvious after a piece is plated.

I've had antique car parts ruined by platers - plated over their own coarse buffer scratches, buffed away the original shapes and lines, etc. The guy was stupid and inept - but, he wanted paid anyway! (Yep, you fine 'em in every line of work - not just plating.)

Fortunately, some folks do very high-quality work.
