New cb360 project won't idle
« on: October 28, 2010, 11:08:31 AM »
Hi guys, i picked up a 76 cb360 twin for a handsome price of $150 with a title and with a new crank case seal, oil, spark plugs, a carb clean, and a battery i have gotten it to run. The issue im having with it is i cant get it to idle properly. I can get it to start up and stay running with the choke on and it idles fine but as soon as i take off the choke it sounds like it takes a huge breath of air and then dies. How do i tune these? i have the manual but it doesn't help all that great ive got it at the stock setting of 1 1/4 turn out and everything seems to check out fine diaphrams are fine all jets are clear but i cant get the darn thing to idle with the choke off. Do any of you know the secret to these things, they are not like the 750 carbs im used to. And i am running the stock air boxes. This is bike is just going to be a very low budget build that i can cruise around on and sell when im ready to start dumping money into my k0.

Make sure the floats are set the right way, 18.5mm for the 360.

I found on mine that even though the diaphragms were in good shape they weren't sealing well around the top edge where they sit in the groove.  A little gasket sealer solved that problem easily.

Could you post a pic of your bike? :)

Mine idled well even with a hole in the right diaphram but my floats were WAY off. Something like 28mm, so the bike would starve for fuel at about 5k rpm and shut off coming to a stop. You could also have improper jet sizes installed in the carbs. Make sure the air filters are clean too. New ones are better. I replaced the filiment in mine with a fram filiment.

Diaphragms not sealing along the groove at the outer edge is not the same as a hole in one, or even both of them, unless the hole were a very large tear.  If it were starving for air due to old/dirty air filters then it would run worse with the choke closed rather than better.
