I have a question for you( i used to own #572)
Does 576 have the 28 tops on the carbs?.. When I owned the bike I knew there was at least two versions of tops and rings, but was nit aware of the numbered tops...and always wondered if the bike I had, would have had them .
 Your early one looks great..donr be surprised if you get...offers..

The 28 carb tops are not a sandcast thing.  They were actually used on VINs up to 17,342.  Service Bulliten #15 was a recall on the caps, slides, springs and cables.  There were issues where the cables would bind up and the throttle would not close.  So the new slides and springs were longer and the new cables were bigger diameter.  To answer your question, 576 would have had them until (and if) they were recalled.  The only 28 tops that exist are ones that weren't thrown away for the recall, or probably more rarely missed the recall.  I used the 28 tops on my restoration in an attempt to make it like it left the factory.  It won't get ridden enough in my opinion to be a safety issue.

Congrats Mark.   The Peterson museum is first class.   I wouldn't be a bit suprised if Honda contacted you about that beauty as well.  I still plan on making a pilgrimage to see that bike some day.

Did they invite you to the big opening gala?  I'm glad that guy from Petersen convinced you...probably not a better example out there! :)
Since I posted that they didn't I received an invitation but like I said I won't be able to go then.  I'll be on a vacation that was planned long before this came up.  But I thought it was really nice that they did that.

Only that you wouldn't ride it regularly  :) And it was in jest as you deciphered.

Some bikes just deserve to be built and admired for their significance. This is one of those very rare, special bikes. Ride it sure, parades, special events. But I'd stay away from regular traffic with it given the volume of dolts piloting autos these days  :'(

 I hope to see it there this winter. There was one in a museum I looked at a couple years ago. My brother remembered I mentioned several incorrect parts on it. Not the case with your bike, Mine is really better than the one in the museum too.

I ordered a personalized license plate for 97 about 12 weeks ago.  It was only supposed to take 8 weeks to get it but I finally got it.  I don’t know about other states but Minnesota doesn’t stamp them anymore, they print them.  I don’t think they look as good but it still makes a nice finishing touch.  I’m sending to the museum and they will put it on for me.

Several states now have the non-stamped plates.  They almost look fake or easy to counterfeit.  It's probably the wave of the future along with the bar code at the bottom.  I DO like your plate number!

Now that I have some time I will try to catch up on my posts.  The #97 carbs have different vents than the later carbs.  Here is a pic with the #97 carb on the left with a straight vent tube.


Here’s a closer view of the straight tube.  I suspect this feature is quite rare.


Here is the typical angled tube for comparison.


The T-joint between the 1-2 and 2-3 carbs is different too.  The early version with the shorter cross tube is on the left.

Although not really a sandcast thing, I decided to use “28” carb parts for a restoration more accurate to leaving the factory.  They were replaced in a recall as described in Honda Service Bulletin #15.

As (most of) you all know, this feature is identified with the number 28 embossed on the carb tops as shown on the left.  Also note that the cable adjuster is much smaller (as well as the rubber cap) for a 5mm diameter cable instead of the 6mm diameter replacement.


The tops are thinner and had a gasket.  Maybe someone can chime in on this but I don’t think the gaskets are used on later carbs.  At least I’ve had some sets that didn’t have them.


The caps are also thinner…


…and the slides are shorter.  The “28” slides are 41mm long and the later slides are 46mm long.


And the springs are shorter.  I had a couple of sets of “28” carbs but was missing a couple of springs.  I had some made up to exactly match the originals.  Here are specs.
Material: stainless steel spring wire
Wire diameter, .9mm (.035”)
Free length, 128mm
Outside diameter, 18.5mm
Active coils, 15 ½
Total coils, 13 ½
Closed ends
Load @ 55mm = 1.15 lb.


I had the carbs rebuilt by hondaman and bought some excellent reproduction 5mm throttle cables. At least for now when I twist the throttle and let go it snaps right back.  I think they will be just fine.

They are in chronological order from newest in the back to oldest in the front.


Everyone knows the red sandcasts are fastest and displayed going downhill makes it look even faster.  ;)  :D


The rest of the pictures are from the guy who originally called me and doesn’t work there anymore but happened to be there for the re-opening.


She’s in pretty nice company.  There is a lot of red around.  A blue/green one would have looked nice too.


Here you can see a Triumph Bonneville to the right and there is a Vincent Black Shadow that you can’t see ahead of the Triumph, a couple of my favorite non-Japanese bikes.


I think that’s a couple of Harleys in front and there is a Kawasaki and Ducati behind.

We do a fly and ride to CA almost every year. This will be a must do stop this year. Once again, absolutely great job, and congrats on being in this museum.
