Ryanair or Easy Jet (from Luton -40mins from London) are both options for going to Europe....also think about BMI as  Ive found them to be good in the past (http://www.flybmi.com/bmi/splash.aspx). Good luck!

well - you missed a bit of the story it seems... my parents live in London - so i'll be there, or thereabouts for around 6 days then jetting off to the continent to sample the eye-talian culture, or, possibly Barcelona instead - i haven't decided, but if i fly with Ryan Air it's about the same cost either way - not a quid difference...

so, biff...you don't mind if i call you biff, do ya big guy? - where do you suggest i go other than London?

junkie out...

Dont listen to Biff,  London is a great place to hang around for a few days....Ace Cafe for one is there (albeit on the Northern Circular), loads of pubs (you have to try the pub lunches), great museums (British Museum, Victoria and Albert, Tate and Tate Modern), Tower of London, explore Greenwich (for GMT and the Royal Observatory), London Eye is worth trying and theres a great old English pub on the South Bank (whose name escapes me but have a wonder down the Thames from the Eye and you`ll find it)....anyway loads to do and easy enough to get around (by the famous/infamous Tube)....and for bikes just pick a busy intersection and watch the motrocycle couriers speed through the traffiic - very impressive.

And this from a Scotsman! (who happens to like London)
Cheers

And don't forget London Bridge.

Oh, yea, that's right, they sold it to a bunch of retirees in Arizona.  :D

Too bad they didn't have eBay with pics back then, the retirees would have known.. maybe. And it probably would have been advertised as "sandcast."  ;D

Andy - that's exactly the plan! My dad and I will see all of that, though he said we could take the whole time at the Brit.Museum if we tried hard enough  :D

I'm expecting to see a friend or two, grab as many pints as possible with dad, see the museum and the cliffs - for some reason i've always wanted to see the chalk cliffs - and all the myriad wonders of just strolling around in a new and unfamiliar place...

I have been through London 4 times in the last 10 years, but always stuck at Heathrow or the Wick or in between them on a shuttle.  :P

So, if i wanted to go up to Scots Land whereabouts should i land myself?

If you want a more touristy place go to Edinburgh with dramatic city centre castle on top of an extinct volcano and the Roya Mike (of whiskey shops) leading up to it...then theres Princess Gardens and the location of "Trainsporring", the famous Grassmarket - good for pubs as is the toursity Rose Street.....however....since Im from Glasgow Id have to say this is more of a lived in feel to it with the famous Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow University (16th Century buildings), the famous Victorian Necropolis cemetry where you`ll find the odd real junkie :-), great pubs, and the people are very friendly....you would need to try the famous Horeshoe bar (longest bar in Europe) and the famous 3 pound 3-course lunches upstairs....this is a real galsgow place very close to the railway station....and if you had time rent a car and drive 90 miles up past Loch Lomond to Glencoe -great roads all the way up and rewarded with dramatic mountains and deep valleys like the famous "lost valley" -great for hikiing and some good climbers pubs here.....you could do it all in 3-days :-) (long days :-))....more time means more places - Isle of Skye, Eilan Donan castle (location of castle in Highlander the movie), Glenfiddich distillery (or any whiskey distillery for that matter), St Andrews (close to Edinburgh) etc etc.....

Good luck,
Andy

now you're talking.

what about renting a motorbike? probably prohibitively expensive...

na - i'm all for the lived-in spots - although the touristy bits have their place - there are reasons they are so popular and it usually has to do with great Art, Architecture or Nature, and i'm down with all that stuff...   ;)

my alternative to Rome is just a big fat British Isles tour, i guess...tour the homeland kinda thing...not out of the question, though the lure of Rome is awfully hard to push off...

If I were you Id go to Rome or Barcelona ......as this time of year it will be a nice temp and if you go to Barcelona you might as well go to Madrid and see Raul :-).....quick trip on the train and you`re there.....but then again I always really enjoy touring in Britain so really depends on how long you have to tour. I have a biker friend in Glasgow who may (and a big if here) have a spare bike - CB750 1982 Bol d`- you could ride but last time I saw it was on our Alpine tour and it was looking shaky then :)....
Cheers
Andy

P.S. Of course if you go to the white cliffs of Dover you should do it on a scooter - like Quadrephenia :-)

Whilst on your scooter you should roll up at the Ace Cafe...  (I know you mentioned Ace cafe earlier)

Really - they have scooter nights.

Rome has much more to see than Barcelona, though Barcelona is definitely worth a visit. There is a high speed train from Madrid to Barcelona (about 3 hours), so you can even visit Madrid. If you are going to come send me a PM and I'll give you my mobile phone number. I will invite you to some beers and show you my CB750...

aaah - you guys are the best!  :)

i have some difficult decisions - i want to make the most of my time as these opportunities come along so rarely in life - i have to say that the idea of going to ROME is just really captivating...but i'm torturing myself with the southern coast of Spain as well...whatever i do i will do to the fullest measure and no slight to the others, that's for sure...it's not easy to choose.

thanks to all for your encouragement! i fully intend to visit the Ace Cafe - it's one of the top on the list for me and my dad.  8)

Been myself to Rome and I have to say that it is a must. Actually, it's like NY, the modern day Rome. The sixtine chapel is a must; the vatican museums are a must. The coliseum, the Trajan Arc... you americans will enjoy strolling in those crowded streets full of people talking loud, and streets full of small cars you have never seen. If I were you I would simply forget about biking. When I do tourism I do tourism. I have lots of time for biking, but in some cities you are only once in a lifetime.

I'm travelling this Sunday to Berlin for my first time ever. Even when it's a job trip I would have the chance to do some sightseeing. I leave the biking for when I'm back.
