Instead of working on Paddy today, I got out with my dad on a lunch ride.  I told you last week about my dad's cherry 1990 CBR1000F he picked up for $2K.  Here are a few shots.  I got to ride it, and it wails!

Check out how nice the wheels are:

Yep, 20 years old with 3,4xx miles!

He added a battery, valve stem caps and a grip strip to the tank to keep his jacket from scratching it.  Other than that, it was ready to roll!

Digger/Stev-O, it really is an awesome evolution from the 750s.  Just a real nice bike.

Cornandp, my dad and I discussed the tires last night.  They're original - 20 years old.  So, even though they seem OK, he's not going to ride it again until he gets them replaced.  Thanks for keeping his/my safety in mind!

glad to hear it. It has always been hard for me to throw away tires that have all their tread there still. He won't regret it though and should feel a difference right away in how the bike feels.

I'm starting to realize why my builds take so long. . . because I'm a friggin' IDIOT!  So, you've undoubtedly read about the restorative properties of a gallon of xylene mixed with 4-8 oz of wintergreen oil then simmered at 200 degrees to restore those old, brittle carb boots?!

So, I got it all set up:

After about 10 minutes, I figured Seamus' carb boots were hard, too, might as well go into the garage and pull them off for this magical concoction to do it's trick.  Then, I heard, "WOOOOOF!"  I looked outside, and saw black smoke billowing across my driveway.  Adios, carb boots!

One humbling call to 911, and these guys dropped by to say "hi":

This forum would be worthless without all the lessons we learn from one another.  Here are mine:

  • If you're going to do this xylene/wintergreen oil thang, be REAL careful about the heat you apply.  It's flashpoint will sneak up on you.
  • Do it outside and away from the house.
  • I didn't have an MSDS or accurate info on how to put out a xylene fire, so I had to call the fire house.  What did they do? Hit it with a fire extinguisher and out it went.  Now you know!

So, now that you're done wetting yourself with laughter over my stupidity, who wants to sell me a set of 78K carb boots?

THAT SUCKS!!!  I've had decent luck with the mixture WITHOUT adding heat.  Sorry about your boots.

Yikes that sucks, sorry man.  I work with xylene on a daily basis and it is nasty stuff.  I think it was water/wintergreen boil, xylene/wintergreen soak....

Yep, but I'm the turkey!  After my heartbeat dropped below 100 and my magic brew cooled, it looks like the carb-to-intake boots might be salvageable!  The carb-to-air cleaner boots, however, well, you be the judge:

I bought an air cleaner with boots from one of you a few months ago, so I may be back in business! ;D

Jaguar, the CBR is super sweet. My dad may be selling it.  If he decides to, I'll let you know. It's only got about 3,600 miles on it now. I can't believe how pristine it is for a 21 year old scoot. You simply wouldn't be able to scape the grin off your face if you bought it.

Having experienced spontaneous combustion first hand as well... you should be grateful it was outside and contained. I was not so lucky but unlike you I actually got to use the fire extinguisher  ;D.

Stev-O, he did buy the CBRF a few months ago, but last month he and I bought R1200GSs to do a bucket-list ride to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. So, it's simply a matter of floorspace in his garage. No issues with the bike, whatsoever.

Little Horse, glad you didn't do any damage during your combustible event!  Someone was kind enough to point out I misread the wintergreen oil thread. You only add heat if mixing water with the wintergreen oil. Otherwise, xylene and wintergreen oil mixed at room temp. I reread the thread and can't believe what a stupid mistake I made!

Stev-O, Alaska is a six-week trip in 2012.  This summer is a two-week trip from Denver to San Diego then mile marker 1 - finish of the Pacific Coast Highway.  Then, up the Oregon coast to Astoria and back across Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Colorado.  We'll use the two-week trip to make sure we have what we need on the bikes for a long trip (as well as what extras are unnecessary), then we'll be better prepared for Alaska.

Little Horse, I'm hopeful this July I can buzz through Portland and meet you in person!

I've rebuilt the front brake caliper and master cylinder.  Just need to bleed the brake, but I'm REALLY struggling with the carb/airbox reassembly.  HELP!  I'm trying to get Paddy running when IT rolls through Colorado!

Here's the situation.  Cylinder to carb boots seem straight:

Here are the carbs installed on them:

The new airbox boots are all oriented correctly, based on this thread:

Put it all together, compress it toward the front of the bike as much as I can, and this is what I get:

Any ideas?  This is where I ended up two weeks ago, thought it was the airbox boots, so I ordered new ones, and now I'm right back in the same spot.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Maybe the carbs aren't seated into the boots all the way. I had a similar issue and had to wrap a ratchet strap around the front of the frame and inlets of the carbs and ratchet them down til they popped in all the way. Its hard to tell from the angle in the pic though.

UnitedGuitar, thanks for the tip!  I flipped my airbox boots 180 degrees, and it seems to have worked:

I may undo it and try your approach, just to make sure.

Tomorrow I plan on cleaning the tank.  I read recently about Acid Magic.  It's a "buffered" muriatic acid that is safe for skin contact but still has (supposedly) rust stripping capabilities of the acid.  Fingers crossed that it works and I can soon get the tank in order.

Here's my list of what's done and what's left to do:

Gap points
Adjust cam chain tensioner
Rebuild front caliper
Rebuild master cylinder

Adjust valves
Drain and change oil
Remove and clean oil pan
Clean tank
Clean petcock
Bodywork on tank
Primer and paint tank and side covers
Dismount old tires
Mount new tires
Replace fork seals
Replace gear shift seal
Replace chain and sprockets
Adjust clutch (or install new clutch cable)
Buy Battery
Turn key and pray for no fires!
Sync carbs
Ride 'til my smile falls off

CoyoteUSP, hopefully I'll have Paddy on the road before the Rally comes through here with IT in early May!  Are you and Katy going to ride in the Rally when it comes through Texas?

I'm going to run pods on Seamus, my 550, but Paddy is staying stock for ease of use/tuning.

Cool to see you're riding a '78.  I'll hit you up for ideas when I've exhausted mine (which never takes long)!
