1976 CB550F Four - Another newb.. Another day!
« on: November 13, 2010, 01:07:33 PM »
Hello all!

So here goes... Just like a lot of people on here.. I've been lurking and watching.. biding my time until I found a bike that I could call my own.

It looks like the time has come!  I picked this bike up on Craigslist for $475.  It's running.. so I'm not sure what kind of deal I really got.  It's missing a few pieces and it looks like the person modified the frame to put that bobber seat on. I'd like to include you all in my grand adventure of mechanical mayhem.  I'm sure you all will be entertained!!  ;)

Some initial pics!  (Sorry for the poor camera work!!)

Please chime in whenever I do something horribly wrong!!!!

Oh yeah...

Check out the carbs..

So I took them apart and cleaned them.. and ordered the $40 (HOLY CRAP) Keyster rebuild kits.. they should be enroute.

However...

I let one of the carbs set in evapo-rust over nite.. and it took off all the green/gray.. I hope this wasn't a protective coating.. ? See below...

Oi vey!

Welcome to the club  :)

It looks like your frame might have been "konged" by the PO. You got a pic of the frame now that it is naked?

"Konging" a frame:

It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

I'm still stripping down the frame.. but once I get it all the way down, I'll post a pic.

It looks like they attempted to "Kong" it.. but they just cut the bars under the seat.. and not the whole top bar.

Didn't they stop makeing the CB500 in '73? And there never was a F model? It looks more like a CB550 to me.  ???

You're right.  Its a 550. With all the searching for parts and trying to find whats compatible, i posted the wrong model. Mebbe I can get a mod to fix the thread title?

So I think I'm going to have the case/block/head all dipped and bead blasted.

No way I'm going to remember how to put all this back together.. that's what you guys are for.. ... right ...?  :P

Question!

I noticed that before I started taking everything down.. whenever I would try to kickstart the bike.. the kick didn't really "bite" until the very bottom or at the end of the "kick stroke".

Is this normal?  Is it something I should fix while I have the crankcase open?
