Cleaning the carbs and ran into this...

I guess there's just no explanation. It's got 2 missing fragments! Hopefully not in the engine...

Ok I got the engine out, and brought it down to the basement(god i'd kill for a garage!). I was also stupid and did this alone. The back is mad at me so I'm taking the rest of the day off! I took the cover off and it was ugly in there, what is this? oil/water?...

And now a confession, I've never opened up a motor before. My "i can do anything" attitude has gotten me this far, but now I'm getting a little nervous!

Basically, I want to repaint it, replace some gaskets, clean out the sludge, and just check clearances, etc. But to do this I'm going to have to take apart the camshaft right? ANyone have a good step by step? with pictures? my clymer (or haynes, i forget) sucks.

kinda looks like water/oil mix...I had a liquid cooled MX bike that had a problem similar froma leaky impeller shaft seal.
Did you have the bike running at all before you dismantled it?
I agree with you about the aftermarket repair manuals being slightly more than useless...good to have forums like this with loads of info.
This is an inspiring build ...I have a friend who wants to build a cb750 cafe...I'll have to point him to this thread...we just talking about getting a powder coat setup...we were looking at the harbor freight stuff...just need to find an electric oven.

Ok! got the engine all apart!

I had to improvise getting the case apart, propped up the top half, and gently "pulled" the lower half toward the table with a clamp. NOt too much pressure, just enough that I just started to hear it separate. Worked great.

The bad news is I found an aluminum fragment in the oil screen. My guess is a chain had previously snapped, and they never found the piece during repair? Oh well, doesnt look very important(opinions welcome!).

And lastly, I think my pistons are toast. Just using a caliper, it looks like the top is a half mm smaller. (im assuminum thats not supposed to be like that). maybe i'll go with an 836cc upgrade!

Hi Elan !
The right way according the honda shop manual is to measure the piston diameter at the skirt 90degree from the piston pin hole and 0,4 in or 10mm from the botom (with a micrometer not a caliper)
the diameter has to be from 60.955mm to 60.985mm with service limit 60.850mm
But this is only one of the required measurements

Yeah I think I might just tell myself they are no good so I can get an 836cc bore. Hehehe

You know if you int want to go with the 836, you can use a 4th over piston kit from z1 enterprises. It's $200 and is a repo of honda's 1mm bigger pistons. Puts you at 762 I want to say?? Not 100% on that, but I believe hondaman gave them his seal of approval! If I need an overbore, I'm going with these!!

Im actually waiting on an ebay seller thats getting a shipment of 100 sets of 65mm pistons for 110 bucks a set! Terry in australia got his hands on a set and has good things to say so far. heres the thread http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=77080.msg898569#msg898569

Ok it's been a little while, but I have been working. I have been stripping and prepping the frame, and will be painting it with a urethane base coat/clear coat automotive paint. Black Ofcourse! I have also stripped the engine, and repainted it with Vht satin black. I still have to paint the fins, but will wait until after I get the cylinders bored out for the 836 setup.

Curing the Vht paint job, " don't mind the smell darling!"

This weekend I will reassemble the lower end, and get the frame painted up next week. I've been really tempted to add some talcum powder to the clearcoat to get a satin finish on the frame, or buy the $50. Flattener, or just get it powdercoated! Ugh.

Got the lower half painted and reassembled! Also splurged a little and bought some finned covers...

Picking up my frame from the powder coater next Monday, also satin black.

Great progress. That picture of your engine paint in the oven made me laugh. When doing mine I had to wait for my wife to go to work before I put any engine parts in the oven. SHe would come home and still said she smelled it.
