as far as people getting killed because they couldnt hear a vehicle......uuuummmmm thats why your mommy told you to LOOK both ways before crossing

I am going to tell you something that may be news to you.
When you get older your hearing and eyesight will degrade.
Most of the people that are getting killed and injured by electric vehicles were in supermarket parking lots. Most are children.
I have been taking a walk and never heard a electric vehicle approaching.
At least electric motorcycles have some chain noise.




California does have more rules for manufacturing, so our cities don't turn into toxic dumps like the ones we are paying to clean up.

Try to keep it looking like a regular motorcycle just like the one in the video that you posted. BTW.... That silver bike in the video is the best electric I have seen. Iy looks like a motorcycle should look.

The CB750 is about 500 lbs.

That silver bike had 6 batteries probably the size of a car battery.

The problem is the range and if you charge the bike during peak utility hours in the evening you will get charged a lot of money.

An electric bike NEEDS a sound system so people can hear it coming. Matter of fact some laws are being changed to make that happen because so many people have stepped in front of electric vehicles and HAVE BEEN KILLED because they did not hear them.

Firstly, the drawings are old. They were an amateurish stab at a simple way of enclosing the batteries. But things are different now.

Firstly, the battery configuration is going to strongly resemble the original inline 4 motor. They're dimensionally VERY similar to the motor, and are going to be painted black so they're not at all going to be a focal point.

The batteries are 60AH lithium batteries running at 72V. They'll get me near 50 miles per charge, depending on riding style. That is 4.6KWH, depending on when I charge, it's really NOT much money at all.

As far as sound, I don't have anything to say about that right now, because I don't know how I'll handle it right now. A loud stereo is not out of the question.

Here's what my livingroom looks like right now. I went through my batteries tonight, tested the BMS boards, and disconnected all of the batteries and got them into their new configuration. The big pack will go where the cylinders are, the small pack where the carbs would be. The motor goes under the small pack.

Hey mate, with all those batteries, what sort of range are you expecting to get out of your electric bike? Also, how long will it take to charge them from almost flat? While electric motorcycles aren't of any real "green" benefit here in Oz with our coal fired electricity plants, (I was leaning toward nuclear power stations until recent events in Japan) the thought of a motorcycle that accellerates so quickly and makes no noise does appeal. I like your idea about making the batteries the size of the gas engine and making them black. The black color will make them look smaller.

One of the major car companies is working on a sound system and I think it will be programmable and you can select the sound you want.

Where i live i am 30 miles from a major city so a 50-60 mile range is not enough.
I would have to charge an electric vehicle while i was at work.

That will be the NEXT issue though won't it... Will your place of work let you charge your electric vehicle, and will they have the electrical power and wiring to support that. Also who will pay the bill?

I think I will have to make a new sign now for my house. "NO ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING." DON'T ASK. Otherwise people will come visit and want to charge their electric vehicle so they can get it charged for free, instead of doing it at home.

Mmmmnn, I can see a new business venture coming up, 1000W Honda generators mounted on little trailers to tow behind your electric bike. Enough noise to frighten away little kids and old farts, and enough power to ride your electric bike from sea to shining sea! (and for not much gas money)

Well that brings up a very interesting subject.

What about a electric  motorcycle where it has a weed eater size gas engine that can charge the batteries? Of course wherever you go you will drive people crazy with the noise and fumes of charging process. LOL

Multiply that times a couple hundred thousand. WOW - then you have some serious pollution.

On the topic of the batteries, I got them gingerly used (20 cycles on them so far) for 2 grand. They're rated for up to 2,000 cycles before severe capacity loss. So 50 miles times 2,000 is about 100,000 miles. So, they're an investment that should last awhile. The batteries came with a charge (zero to full in a bit over 2 hours) and the battery management system, which monitors charging and discharging to keep the batteries safe.

If anybody has any more specific questions I'll do my best to answer.

And I'm not doing this because I'm a green weenie or anything, but it's something new to try.

I have been in and out of R/C racing several times, every time I get back in I am amazed at the battery and brushless motor advancements.

I don't know much about the scale it would take to make practical transportation but I have been considering building an electric or possably a hybrid scooter using a brushless motor about the size of a pop can, it is supposedly equal to a 50 cc two stroke.

No transmission. There's a lot of argument about the merit of a transmission in the world of electric vehicles, so I'll try to give you a greatest hits.

Electric motors, although they have all the available torque right off the line, still have a peak efficiency at a certain RPM. Going directly to the back wheel means you have to pick a certain ratio, so you have to pick between really fast off the line or top speed. A transmission can get keep you in peak efficiency and give you both top speed and off the line-performance, but it adds weight and complexity. And 6 speeds aren't really needed, two speeds would even be a big improvement, but nobody has a small enough, light enough, or robust enough two speed for a motorcycle. You're better off getting a more powerful motor and going higher voltage with more batteries (until somebody markets the right kind of transmission).

Some people have been experimenting with series and parallel switching for multiple motors, meaning you can have the motors see full current (amperage) at half voltage (LOTS of torque) and switch to full voltage half current (higher speed).

Reverse gear is handled entirely by the controller. If I wanted to I could have the bike go as fast backwards as forwards (but I don't want that....)

Sorry for the hijack but this is a public  F-O-R-U-M, and with a heading like "you guys are going to kill me", sheik must have expected some negativity. I think it would be boring as #$%* if everyone just went around back slapping without some criticism or other opinion....

Sorry mate, as much as I'm interested in electric bikes for their novelty value, (as they have very little practical value on my side of the pond)  there's nothing pornographic about a CB750 that's had it's iconic, history making power-plant removed, and replaced with an electric motor. It's not a CB750 any more, it's just an electric bike with a nice paint job.  Cheers, Terry.
