What Tank Liner Do You Use?
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:56:48 AM »
I feel like this is almost like starting an oil thread. I'm getting ready to purchase a liner for my Dunstall tank and needless to say I've read good and bad about all the options. I figured I'd put this up to start a few arguments  ;D and maybe get a little more insight and go with what the majority of people have had the least amount of trouble with.

Whatever NAPA sells.  It is thinner than Kreem and waaay cheaper.

I did the research a couple years ago when I bought my Dunstall tank and decided to put my money into the Caswell camp.  However, I am now to the point of installing and using my tank, and just realized that the tank already has a liner in it (the PO put this Bill Hirsch liner in it but never got around to using the tank).  I did a bench test and the fuel came out clear (without dissolved gunk in it).  So I am going to use it as is but keep an eye on it.  I will be holding on to my Caswell liner in case I need to go back and re-line the tank at some point.
Sorry I don't have any real world experience to share.   :-\

I have never had a failure with the Caswell stuff.  While I avoid using it unless there is no other choice it is the only one I'll use.

I used the Bill Hirsch on one tank and RedKote on a second. No issues with either one.

Looking for a better alternative to POR-15. The last one failed. Considering Caswell.

UPDATE:
The Hirsch liner has started to come apart and clog my carbs.  I guess it's time to use the Caswell kit I bought.

I have had failures with Kreeme gas tank liner. I will never use it again.

Then I used Caswell's gas tank liner with colorant. Excellent results much thicker too.
I used white epoxy colorant from Tap plastics. 2 oz. jar mixed for $6.50
Caswell said it was fine.

One whole kit for a 1978 CB750 gas tank. Nothing left over to drain out.
I just kept turning around for about 30 minutes until it went off.
A Caswell technician told me that a slight rust on the metal was ok too.

The manufacturers better start getting materials to deal with this new ethanol gas.

I used Kreem MANY years ago and it's still fine. Musta done it right with a half way decent tank that allowed proper adhearance. Don't wait til it's too far gone. Any of these are meant to be protective liners and not repair.

Caswell on 2 tanks a little while ago. No problems yet, but not much time on them either. I had a tank from a PO with Kreem failure. Lucky, Caswell sells one now with red colorant in it. They call it dragons blood. It was the same price when I checked before, but is now $10 more than the standard motorcycle kit. http://www.caswellplating.com/restoration-aids/epoxy-gas-tank-sealer/dragons-blood-gas-tank-sealer.html

After this thread has collected some data, it might be interesting to have the OP start another one that asks the question a bit differently--more of a statement.  In addition to what people have used, specifically, people probably would want to know what would be used again by the same user.

Something like:  "I have personal experience with using the following types...................and this is the one I would use again as a first option."

I'm not familiar with how to set up polls with multiple options on this board, but that added data may give another layer of helpful anecdotes.

All the best,

Shane

I've used Kreeme twice in the past with poor results. I've done two tanks with the Caswell stuff and it seems to work well and was so much easier to use. It's interesting about them coming out with colored stuff now.....the clear was a bit hard to see how well things were getting covered unless one used a flashlight.

Tidbit; I had some Caswell stuff left over from coating a tank so I quickly coated a 1 gallon auxillary tank before the stuff set up....well, of course, later I needed to powdercoat that same tank. I wasn't sure if the epoxy would burn out at the 375 degree cooking or not....it stood up well....didn't brown or anything...just the same as when I first put it in. Try that with some of them other coats!

After reading this thread, I'm wondering if I should use the whole caswell kit or just half when I coat my tank.  It says one kit will do two tanks, but my tank is a slightly longer Benjies fiberglass tank.  What say the experienced hive?

Use the whole kit.  its great stuff but doesn't cover near as much as the can sz

I did a BSA 500 single tank with it and it has taken all the pounding that big single can put out!
