Would this modified wiring diagram on CB550 F work?
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:51:39 AM »
Hey All,

I took and modified a CB550F wiring diagram that is attached below.   Wondering if it would work as drawn?  If not, what have I done wrong or need to modify to be functional?

My aim is the following:

Operating with toggle switch instead of key.   DPST 20amp  off  / on (4 connectors) The toggle would function as the kill switch
Toggle on headlamp shell to operate as hi/low and off
Turn signal toggle switch, 3 position left / off / right/
Dyna S ignition
No instrument lighting
One set of turn signals that will show to the front and rear
Removed clutch switch / neutral safety switch and all of those sort of items
Brake light activated by rear foot lever only

Does it look functional?    Is the starter button wired correctly?

The starter switch is wrong. The solenoid is getting +12V from the black wire on one coil terminal, and you're switching +12 to the other terminal. Either ground one wire on the solenoid and switch the power as shown, or power the solenoid coil and switch the ground.

In addition to what Bodi said...
I don't think your ignition toggle is going to power the lights.  You didn't show the switch internal routing or the what connection go where on the toggle switch.
The poles are isolated from each other within the switch.  Only the red wire is hot.  So, the pole it is connected to will activate only one terminal, unless you could make a bridge wire external, to tie the red to two terminals, and then combine brown white onto its counterpart pole connecton.

Hey TT and Bodi,

Before I move to the ignition toggle comments you made, can you help me remedy the starter switch issue?  Forgive me, I am new to lots of matters concerning  wiring in general.  (scares the bejeebers out of me)

All the wires shown are the actual placement of wires on the original diagram other than the squiggly lines that I drew in and removal of other wiring and components.  All terminals at the starter solenoid is as provided in the original stock diagram.

Concerning the starter button wiring. Not sure I quite follow.  Do I eliminate the black wire to the starter button and then install a ground wire in that location?

I've submitted an altered diagram to show what I am attempting to explain.

Is this part correct now?  Again, no switch internals are diagrammed yet, just want to know where the wires should go first.

The change you made, should allow the starter to work in the diagram.  It's mostly like the 74 CB550 (K0) operated.

What is not clear, is why you began with a Cb550 diagram and not a CB550F diagram.  It won't matter if you are wiring from scratch, it will matter if you are just modifiying a CB550F's wiring.
You will find different colors and connections between the two models.

CRAP!!!    TT.

I thought this diagram was for my CB550F.   I downloaded this on the internet and just made modifications to it.    Correct, I have a 550F.

Is there a colored CB550F wiring diagram on the internet somewhere you know of that I can download to modify?  That way I will have it correct before going to the garage this winter to wire up my project

Appreciated the help!!  It will save me tons of time and frustration down the road.!!

I use the wire diagram in the Honda Shop manual.  Not in color, but accurate for the model.
