cb550 Rear Wheel Bearing retainer issue!!!
« on: December 04, 2010, 12:30:51 pm »
I cant get the damn thing off.  I'm aware its a reverse thread.  I drilled the stakes and heated it, and banged it with a brass punch and hammer, didnt budge.  I got angry, and beat it again, didnt budge.  I made a tool to fit in the holes and it just wont hold enough to break it loose.  The metal seems to be just too soft and too thin on the flange to break it free.

any ideas out there?  I'm getting angry again just writing about it.

keep up the good work guys,

John

I'm not a 500 guy so filling time till one shows up. Are there 2 retainers? And isn't just one reverse thread and the other rt hand thread? Sure you've got the correct one?

I picked up a pin wrench from Fastenal.  Had to file down the pins a little to fit but I haven't met a bearing retainer ring it couldn't handle since!

Before I got the wrench, I would do all the tricks you have done, ending up with a retainer in such shytty shape that I wouldn't even think of putting it back in.  Luckily Honda still sold these retainer rings.  Check with your parts source before you get angry with it again!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Keep at it, left hand thread. Make a four pin tool that is as tight as possible.

I had one once that wouldn't come out, threads must have been damaged on the way in. Four pin tool tight and with an impact the tool held but the retainer was tougher.

I just changed mine out on my 500. Drilled out the stakes. soaked it in pb blast and took a heatgun to it. I just used a large flat head screwdriver and a hammer and it worked like a charm.

Finally got it!!!!!  acetelene torch, a huge strap wrench to hold it and giant brass punch with a hammer!!!

so I heated it really hot, then sprayed the retainer with brake clean to cool just the retainer off and not the hub, then had my buddy hold the hub with a strap wrench while i beat it into submission.   voila.  now 4 beers later, i feel like i've really accomplished something.

thanks guys, i couldnt have done it without you,

Johnny law.
