Looks like an interesting build Midnight08, will be keeping an eye on it.

If your going to replace the frame, and go mono shock you might want to check out the frame I'll be using for my racer project. It's designed for the 750, and an alloy swingarm is an available option. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=74854.0 Denis can make the steering head to suit any triple you want, so you could avoid the hassle of machining / fitting a new stem. I appreciate that info tin. I will keep him in mind when I am building the frame. Right now i want to get the front end installed on the stock frame and the fuel injection completely sorted before I start on the frame or swing arm.

well, I have decided that the money that people are asking to make the steering stem will be better spent on purchasing a lathe. SOOOO I am going to pick one up today....

Its an Atlas model 618

You are going to wonder how you ever got along with not having a lathe. It sounds like you do and are talented enough to tackle most anything. That lathe will pay for itself in short order. Just a note...all the attachments, bits, etc. etc. will cost as much as the lathe itself. Once you start doing things with the lathe you will be wanting a milling machine. The two go hand in hand on so many projects. Sometimes you can go so far in turning a piece, then the piece needs to be faced, a slot cut, bored, etc. Same with a mill....you do a few steps in the mill then some final work needs to be done in a lathe.

My friend is picking up a mill and a lathe next week. I have no experience on a lathe. Where is the best place to learn, any good reference material or videos?

I am sure I will be picking up a mill some time soon as well. This one project is already paying off about 3/4 of the price of the machine.... once i start needing wheel spacers etc... it will pay off quickly...

The lathe came with some good tooling but not nearly enough. I will be picking up some tooling as needed.

cdoggy has a mill that i can use... im sure he will be bugging me to use the lathe... so it all works out. only problem is that he doesnt live in town anymore... so eventually i will need my own mill here.

It was an easy decision... The part was going to cost me 3/4 of the price of buying the machine.... might as well buy the tool that will make the part and all of the other little parts that I am going to need... I have already thought of a million pieces that i will need to make and CAN make now....

The Thing might actually stop now.... Whats even cooler, is that now i have a lathe to make the indexing/spacing rings that I am going to need to actually mount the rotors to the old CB750 rims... I'm excited.

Now you can make that steering stem. What are the specs on that lathe? Still trying to figure out all the terms.

the lathe that i bought is a atlas model 618. The numbering at the end of the atlas lathes indicates the size of them. So its a 6" bed with 18"s between centers. plenty big enough to do the things that I need right now. It wont cut a lot of material at one time, but as long as i go slow, I will get the things i need made. besides, as a beginner I should be going slow anyways.

23T... Those rotors are a hell of a lot bigger than I thought they were. but that just means the bike might actually stop now. I got two of them so I will be running twin disk setup

Interesting build. what are your plans with the axle and the differing diameters of the fork and the front hub?

For the front axle, I will just use the CBR1000rr front axle. I have found some bearings that I can use that have the CB750 outer diameter and the CBR1000rr inner diameter.

As for the fron hub size difference, I will be making some indexing/spacing rings that will locate the rotors properly. I will then make some axle spacers that will locat that assembly in the center of the forks.

Nice score on the lathe. You'll be amazed at all that you can do with it. As far as learning how, you need to do some research and take your time. I went through the vo-tech system when I was a kid and worked as a tool and die maker for a number of years before moving on to a different career. All I can tell you is that it is not a toy and you need to learn how to run it safely. You will also need an assortment of dial indicators, micrometers, etc. and these can be found somewhat inexpensively on ebay and CL. Of course there are numerous cutting tools and such that you will need as well. If you know someone that knows how to run it or if there is maybe a metalworking club of some type near you it could put you miles ahead in your endeavors. Learning how to use it will only scratch the surface. Practice and experience will render more beautiful results and more ability to make complex objects. Just keep in mind at all times that it has the power to suck you in and spit you out. Also, beware, as others have stated owning this will lead to buying a mill which will open up a whole new can of worms.

Yes after running one in a production environment for many years before moving into what I do now, safety was the biggest learning curve. Also, keep the parts cool while working with them. If you can pick up some quality coolant just for lathes you won't be sorry. Also take good care of it, it will last a lifetime. You will want to get a grinder if you don't have one to keep the bits sharp, and for grinding reliefs for those one off parts.
