Got Granite?
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:22:16 AM »
We are doing a kitchen remodel next month and the laminate and tile counters will have to go!
I have already received three bids for granite and since I am a Project Manager, got good pricing as low as $28 sq ft for a level 1 granite installed.
We are leaning towards Autumn Brown, it will contrast our oak cabinets and travertine floor [sample in photo].
For the pros out there or anyone who has gone through this, please share your knowledge, tricks or tips.

Thanks.

$28/sq ft , this is contractor price, for level1 [cheapest level].

They had 300+ slabs in stock and I was able to tour the fab shop, very impressive!

You sure you want to go with granite for your countertops?

It has more than a few drawbacks.

Yes, I love natural stone. If you have granite, what have the drawbacks been for you?

Might be staining and need to periodically reseal the surface.

I can understand if you get it for a mint but quartz is more durable if you are looking for natural stone.
I think you have to periodically seal quartz also though.

Silestone [made w/quartz] is a good product, but most colors look "man made" to me:

I have purchased it in the past for projects at work as it once was a cheaper alternative to granite. Not cheaper any longer.
I have sealed granite before, pretty simple and only needs to be done once a year. Not a deal killer by any means.

Cycleranger - yes will let you know how it goes and will get you the contractor price too.
