Ok this is getting stupid....75 550F question...
« on: April 29, 2005, 12:06:59 PM »
I'm trying to adjust the clutch on my 75 550F.  The major problem is none of the online manuals listed in the FAQ, nor the ones at honda4fun have the proper adjustment procedure for this bike....  Anyone know how to do this?

I do *not* have a large slotted adjuster, with a lock bolt.  What I "think" is the adjuster looks to be a small slotted bolt with a locknut on it, sticking out of the case of the engine, below the clutch release arm, on the right side of the motor, behind the crankcase...is this correct, or is this the primary chain tension adjustment...or what?

<---a little annoyed

Greets,
You are correct in assuming it is the clutch adjuster. Honda changed the clutch actuator design on the CB550 to a lever type from the previous CB500 lifter rod type. To adjust the 550 clutch, note the following:

1. Loosen the cable adjuster and screw it in or out until the mark on the operating arm is aligned with the mark on the crankcase.
2. Loosen the clutch adjuster lock nut on the clutch housing and turn the adjuster until resistance is felt.
3. Back the clutch adjuster off 1/4 turn and tighten the lock nut. Done.

Never adjust the clutch using the cable adjuster only.

Hope this helps you...

I got frustrated and pulled the exhaust off,  and the kickstand, and the footpeg, and the brake lever, and the clutch housing, to see how it worked.  The only problem I have, is the only "resistance" I feel, is when it is turned all the way clockwise (to the point that it is trying to back the adjusting rod out of the inner nut-thingy....

Ah well, at any rate, adjusted it the best I could, and the chatter is still there, although it becomes totally quiet when I let the clutch out a titch and let it drag....

At least I'm sure the noise is coming from the clutch basket...

Wonder if anyone sells a new one?
