  • "Damn! These HM300 Pipes Are Expensive!!!"
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .. uphill BOTH ways . through year 'round blizzards. Carrying their younger siblings on their backs ... to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a Straight-A average, despite their full- time, after-school job at the local textile mill .... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But....

Now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I
was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter .. with a Pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day! to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

And talk of about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to steal it from your brother or bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked! Your
guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! ... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a huge hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up .. we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire . imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid JiffyPop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled.

You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

   I hear you jonesy,
Only, in my day, the tv had 3 stations, cartoons were on saturday like with you, we had a tv antenna (cable wasn't invented yet), telephones had a rotary dial (no buttons) and a cord ( you couldn't take the phone over to anywhere in the house (the cord wasn't long enough) we did have drive in theaters, radios were am only ( no fm and no stereo) No CDs, (in fact cassettes, 8 track and 4 track tape players weren't made yet. You had record players with 78, 45 and 33 1/3 rpm records.
Radio were an option in cars and trucks. VCRs &DVD player/recorders weren't here yet. Milk was delivered in a milk truck and in some place, ice was delivered because some of the less fortunate people had actual "ice boxes" not refrigerators. But on the good side, I could walk to the movie theater downtown (not worry about getting kidnapped, abuse or killed) and pay my way in, buy a coke and candy for about maybe $.35-.45. This was back in the 50's By the way I'm 59 today. So I
totally understand your feeling. And I remember when they used to sneak the new cars into the dealers all covered up and the weren't shown until september I believe.  Later on, Bill :) ;)

I feel your pain jonesy, I never tasted Coca-cola until I was 16, you couldn't buy a pair of Levis down here until about 1970 but I was out after school until the word went around the block that my tea was being served and we never started locking our house when we went out until about 1975....I liked it back then, life was a lot simpler for me..

Don't forget about the "Party Line" phone, you pick up the phone and listen to see if someone else has the line >:(.  Also would come home from school, (from the age of 10) and cook my own meals because I was a "latch key" kid.  Damn I miss the good old days ;D

Hey James,    I forgot about the party line phone. You also had to pay attention to the number of rings, maybe 2 short rings and 1 long ring, for example. Otherwise you'd answer the phone when it was someone else's call. And the phone numbers started with 2 letters and then had 5 numbers (like LO-52076), then they finally changed to all numbers (like 565-2076). Another thing was,
a certain time in the afternoon, 5 days a week, the ice cream man would come by on his 3 wheel bicycle (2 wheels at the front with an insulated box which held the ice cream. He didn't have music, he had an flat piece of metal (that was attached on the handle, he used to steer with, and it had a row of bells that could be rocked back and forth to make them ring. Oh yeah and cokes were a nickel apiece and came in a bottle (6 oz. I think) Oh memories. Later on, I think I hear the icecream man. :D        Bill   :) ;)

About the rotary phone:

My family had rotary phones until so much stuff became touchtone-oriented that you couldn't get anywhere with a rotary and many phone companies would no longer support that kind of service. One time a friend was over to play (we were around 12 years old or so at the time) and asked if he could call his mom to ask if he could stay longer. We said sure. He went over to the phone, picked up the handset, went to dial and froze. He had never seen a rotary dial phone and had no clue how to use it.

My favorite no one mentioned yet... remember (in the US) the $2 bill and the Susan B. Anthony Dollar coin (that everyone mistaked for a quarter?)

58 now and I remember my grandmother having an icebox, My uncle was the first in the area to have a TV and he would put it out on the front porch and the whole neighborhood would bring chars and set in the yard to watch, black and white and so snowy it was hard to see but we watched anyway. I also worked on and installed those party line phones. There were 2 party 4 party and 8 party line phones. How would you like to have dial up on one of those?Goodtimes. Dannie

Colour TV came to the UK in 1970 - just in time for the Mexico World Cup.

My mum worked and so I guess we were "well off" coz we had a colour TV. It was e-norm-ous.

However, we only had BBC then. One channel.  I'll write that again... 1 channel!

It came on at about 6pm and went of at 10pm when they played the national anthem.

Thanks duster,

Every little bit helps. Now, I've got a question. Every time I see you, you're sitting on your
bike. Do you ever go for a spin? Ha! Ha! :D Sorry bout that, I just couldn't resist that one.
Seriously though, do you still have that one or has it become one the fond memories? Just
curious, looks like it has a lot of character. You take care dude and I'll catch you later on, Bill :) ;)

Now I'm really showing my age...My mother used to phone her meat order through to the butcher and he would deliver it all wrapped up in brown paper, and the blood and stuff would have seeped through in places on the wrapping...Then on Thursdays the fish-monger would sell fish out of the back of his van in out street...it's all comming back to me now...

Man...

When I was a kid, we had the rotary phone, a black and white (mostly) TV and my parents had just gotten a 'Dish washer' to make handling the chillun's easier.  Summers were marked by going out and fishing to supplement dinners that week, and November was like a local holiday- Deer season.  You killed your own meat and a couple bucks or (in WI, 'earning' a buck by shooting doe) lasted about a year in the freezer- you took it to the village butcher shop and had it processed if you couldn't handle it all yourself.

Summers were spent barefoot with unlocked screen doors, .22 rifle in one hand, fishing pole in the other as we went to the woods next to the lake...

Winters were busy processing venison, shoveling out, walking to school (or maybe taking the bus) with my little sister... stoking the outdoor wood burner with oak, maple and cedar cut/hauled/split that summer.

I honestly didn't know there was music beyond Hendrix, Joplin, the Beatles, the Who, the Doors, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and other Vietnam-era fare until I was about 14.  After finding out who the 'Spice Girls' were that everyone at school was talking about, I happily went back to my 8 tracks and vinyls thank-you-very-much.

Thank god for growing up in the sticks, or I don't think I'd be a decent person otherwise.  I agree- 'kids' these days have NO idea what 'real life' is or was.

Yup, I grew up with a Sony BetaMax VCR. (Probably still buried in the basement at my parent's house somewhere...)

I'm in the same boat, in a way. I grew up on vinyl records that played all kinds of 60's-70's tunes. I was an outcast since I was the only kid that listened to the Doors/Cream/Led Zeppelin/The Who/etc. (Made long car trips nice since I liked the same music as my folks!)

I had a laugh the other day when I found (still in the box) an FM radio converter kit. After all the stories I heard about how FM used to be, it sounded like what XM radio is now- only it was free!

......but more to our point, perhaps: remember when if you were starting to ride a bike you would get something like a 175, cut your teeth on it and then progress up to, maybe a 250. Then when you had some miles under the wheels, and probably your first job, you could go out and buy a 'big' bike....one of them there 500's, or if you were really lucky, a 650. Then Honda came along and blew everything out of the water with the first CB750.

Nowadays newbies look at me like I crawled out from under a stone when I tell them  I started on a 175. When I was instructing it was not at all uncommon for neophyte riders to ask me my opinion of them jumping on a 1000cc sport bike because they thought that maybe a 600cc would be 'too small' and that they were afraid that they would out grow it!!

Thank goodness for the continued existence of old, smaller, non-pretentious, FUN, motorcycles!!

Funny you should mention it, but when I peruse the local paper for bikes for sale, It's amazing how many mega-cc monsters are for sale with virtually no miles on them. Have to wonder if the payments got them or they scared themselves to death the first time out?

Me too.

I went the 125 - 175 - 500 route but stopped there for 30 years until I recently bought a VFR800.

In 1977 a 500 was a big bike, now it's a starter.
