1st Time start up on new rebuild
« on: January 02, 2011, 10:25:49 AM »
Hello all,

I have just finished dropping in a new rebuilt CB550 engine in my bike along with nicely clean rebuilt carbs and i'm about ready to start her up for the first time.  I checked the timing via light, added oil with one qt added to the top via tappet covers, connected all electrical,  Added Gas, and plugs.  Now I just need to know anything else that I may have missed or is there some sorta starting procedure for a new motor.  I've kicked it over to prime the engine and now I think i'm ready to go.  I am using my old coils and all because they were working before I pulled the motor.  I plan on adding an electronic ignition (Dyna) and new Dyna coils as well.  I just wanted to fire the engine first  (didnt want to replace too much stuff so there weren't too many variables to go wrong)  Any pointers an / or ideas, please share.  Thanx,
-Pod-

I think ur ready to go!  Priming the engine enough so that the oil light goes out) is a key thing to do.  You may want to have the #1 and #4 tappet covers loose so you can take a quick look inside to make sure plenty of oil is splashing around up there once she does start.

You may want to hold off for a little to give the expert builders a chance to chime in.

P.S.  Judging by the picture, you must be in the extreme south end of Portland  ;D

Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Assuming it's a complete rebuild, and the internals have moly assy lube all over it, don't keep the break in oil in very long.. let stuff seat itself, and warm up.. maybe take a little part throttle blast down the block and back.. then get out the feeler gauges, check the tappets again, and the cam adjuster..
drop that first oil and really look it over, then have a look at the filter for any debris.
I like to run thinner than spec'd oil for that first fire up, just because it'll more easily carry off any crap from assembly.
Then go to factory spec'd weight and run it!
Beautiful bike !

That's a great feeling isn't it? I personally had to kick mine (no starter) about 4-6 times after I primed it. Well done sir

Awsome man! I guess i'm weighing in young at 26, but new stuff realy doesn't do much for me exept for transportation, and even then I'd rather have an old ride that i built to be reliable than a new one. But yeah your bike is sick man! i've got a 76 550, currently got an extra motor in parts on the floor of my bedroom, and have been planning on using pipes like yours, how do you like them, i heard them in the vid, but real life is always different. Loud i know, but are they unbearably loud? i'm running some 4 into 1 with no baffle, and it doesn't bother me with the loudness.

Killer bike!

dont let it idle for any peroid when its new, also load the engine a little more than you think you should, this puts gas pressure behind the rings and pushes them against the bore and helps to bed them in nice, change the oil and filter after a hundred miles,id see about finalizing the sync then go around the block for the first shake down ride, well done.

I know breaking in all the v8s i've built, run them with break in oil for 20 min at 2k to 2.5k. shut down, cut filter, change oil. then first five hundo under 3/4 throttle but never realy steady at one speed or RPM.

thats done because v8s cam lobes only get a splash lube or what ever drains down over them, you wouldnt need to do that if the same cam and matched lifters were used, even with a new cam its best to drive the car and bed those rings,if you live in the city you cant avoid idling though, these honda cams have their own little sump, just ride it normally without peak revving it,do load the engine somewhat to bed those rings,im guessing you usd the same cam and rockers?
