desperately need help.....
« on: January 03, 2011, 08:23:20 AM »
long story short.  aquired a 78 cb750k a few months ago from my uncle.  was non running for about 20 years.  engine seized.  bought new engine that turned over and had compression and did an engine swap.  that engine was also not run in a long while. list of stuff I have done:

Changed plugs
checked for spark
adjusted points
adjusted timing
checked electric starter
changed oil
new battery
changed all fuses
new fuel in clean gas tank
had carbs cleaned/ rebuilt by SOHCDigger
new throttle cable

so....going to start the bike in the first time in forever. Choke on, petcock on, tried electric starter, turns over....won't start.  just turns over.  petcock is not clogged.  how can i make sure fuel is going to the engine?  do i really need to prime the accelerator pump, and how do i do that.  what the heck could i be missing? remove the gremlins?

I've just about given up.

HELLLLLLLP! :-[ :-[ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

You can make sure you are getting fuel to your carbs by cracking open one of the float bowl screws.  Yes, prime the accelerator pump by manually pushing down on the rod with a flat blade screwdriver until you see fuel coming out of each one of the pump nozzles.  Once you get the fuel coming out of there, a few quick twists of the throttle should get the engine to fire.  Also, did you adjust your idle with the screw at the #4 carb?  It is probably still adjusted all the way to no fuel.  If you didn't adjust this, you won't be getting enough air/fuel to start and run.

ok cracked open float bowl screws  on 1 and 4 carb...no fuel.  how do i prime it if i don't know what the accelerator pump looks like or where on the carbs it is located.  so i don't know where to find it. lol

Yes, big bronze one.  Turn it clockwise one turn.  Repeat this until the engine starts, then you may need to turn it back down.

Here's a picture of your pump rod:

Also, you only cracked open the screws on 1 & 4, right?  I'm assuming 2 & 3 aren't getting fuel either.  Do you have an in-line fuel filter?  If so, did you change it?  Pull the line off of the carbs and turn the petcock on to verify that you are getting fuel TO the carbs.  Attempting to prim your accelerator pump will not do anything until your carbs are getting fuel.

petcock is releasing fuel...no inline fuel filter. tried moving the accelerator pump rod, didn't move unless i turned the throttle.  turned the screw clockwise many turns, still no fuel coming out bottom of the carbs. am i retarded?

I hope you left fuel on a while, if the overflow tubes or hoses are clogged it may take a while..
I usually put tank on reserver to try, in case petcock is partly clogged.

Did you remove the line from the carbs and verify that fuel is going all the way through the lines?  There may be some crap stuck in there.  Turning the idle screw will not make fuel come to the carbs, only opens the throttle.  You cracked open the drain screws on the bottom of the bowls, right?

Just saying as checking for fuel flow indooors can get dangerous, and explosive.. :o

Myself I would try priming it with some type of squirt bottle using gas, NOT starter fluid.. but it can be dangerous, so I wont mention it.. You did not hear it from me..

Proceed carefully..

left petcock on for a few minutes.  walked away.  came back....large gas puddle under bike OUTSIDE!  lmao so i guess gas is going to them now.  should it still be dripping even when i have the float bowl screws tightened all the way?

Sounds like there was a blockage somewhere, which now it's cleared is fouling one or more (possibly all) of your float needles.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

I just found this thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=72147.0 while researching something else.

Is it possible your ignition advancer may be installed 180 degrees off?

Even if you never removed it, it may be worth checking since PO's park bikes that quit running....sometimes.  ::)
