Anyone have a good way to prime the accel pump on PD carbs? I had a few leaks I had to deal with today, and am now trying to get the pump to squirt. So I'm open to any ideas cause I don't have a one.

Take a flat blade screwdriver and push down on the top of the pump shaft. If you don't get anything squirting with about ten pumps, you probably have a check valve sticking. Take the bowl off #2 and soak the bowl and accelerator pump cap in carb cleaner for a few hours and then blow through with compressed air.

Hi Travis!
The check valves don't cause trouble usually.....unless you take 'em out and put them back upside-down, there is one in the acc. pump 'sump' and one in the carb body where the pumped gas flows from carb bowl to carb body.... I'm sure your familiar with all that !! One or two things tho'.... is the little o-ring in place where bowl meets body and have you verified the squirter 'posts' in each carb throat is clear ? The thin black rubber line between each carb carries the acc. pump gas to each 'post'. The opening in each post is extremely small and easily blocked. The acc. sump should fill ( prime ) no problem if the bowls are filling O.K........ Good luck,....... y'all snowed in ?

Hey Ray thanks for the tips! Yeah we're socked in pretty good. I just rescued a stuck abulance sitting on piece of sheet ice which is the current condition of every road we have. I think I'm about to go after another stuck one on a hil.

Well folks I've had a chance to really really really clean my carbs the last 2 days, and I still have a non-fuctional accel pump.

I have soaked all parts in carb cleaner, wire cleaned them as best I could, and blew compressed air through all the passages and still nothing. I have also checked the diaphragm twice for holes and made sure the Mickey Mouse ears had the proper holes. I don't get it. It's a simple system and yet it continues to elude me.

Anyway if anyone has any other ideas on the pump, please feel free to share them. I need them bad!

P.S. With everything put together and the bowl full of gas and off the carb, I can actuate the rod and nothing squirts out. Just thought I would add that too.

You have to verify that the two check valves only allow fluid to pass one way.

Carb bowl to pump

Pump to squirt nozzles.

Checked that again today. All worked properly. I'm still gonna keep plugging away, I'll figure this out eventually. $:-\$

Also a new question,

Will I be able to make the accel pump squirt with the bowl off the carb, or is it like bleeding the brakes where it has to be sealed to not let in out side air? Don't know why I just thought of that, just thought I'd run it by everyone here.

My carbs were plugged at the outlets in a couple of the carbs and I had to use a small butane torch to heat up the nozzles to get them to unclog.

Yes, the #2 carb bowl containing the acc. pump should pump gas out the riser tube that would connect to the carb body ( memo about the little o-ring ) when off the bike and filled with gas.... it's not sealed from athmosphere in any way to make it 'pressurise' or anything.....when the diaphragm is depressed it forces fuel thru' the check valve and up the tube. If that won't happen, either the diaphragm is torn or the check valve is blocked or not checking !

I didn't pass a wire that far down the system. However I did use compressed air on the system the other day, I had the number 1 carb off to fix some leaking o-rings and while it was apart I blew throught the accelp pump rail and it seemed clear. Plus I noticed today that it seems no fuel is getting out of the passage that goes to the carbs. Is it possible to get that check valve out to clean the passage? If not any good ideas?

I now believe that the diaphragm itself has to be bad. It still moves no gas what so ever, so for giggles I put the pump bowl back on with no guts in it (yes I know it leaked all over) but I was able to plug off the ports and when I put air to the fill hole in the carb bowl fuel came flying out of the check valve! So this tells me that the passages are clear, and for some reason I can't see the pump must be bad. Oh well it's just money right?

If these are the stock carbs on the K7/K8, I had the same problem. What I found was that the diaphram / gasket that was in the carbs from new did not have the hole punched to allow gas to even enter the accel pump chamber. I used a small hole punch and place it where it needed to be and BAM, now have all 4 squirters working as they should.

This bike never ever did have them working from new.

Before taking everything apart check to see if the tubes you to the carb throats are open.

The carbs have been off the bike for a while now, just trying to get them clean and fully functional. The tubes are clear I ran air through them the other day. I just been trying to find out why the pump pushes no gas out, but like I said earlier I put compressed air to the pump bowl and fuel squirted everywhere so I know the passages are clear. Also the ears have good clear holes. No matter how much I pump it I get nothing coming out. So it leads me to believe that the pump is bad somehow.

why don't you just twist the throttle to full a half dozen times or so?
doesn't the throttle action cause the pump to activate?

owait... i just realized the carbs AREN'T on the bike.

My brother had one that had a nozzle plugged. We ended up pulling out the brass squirter cleaning it out and then pressing it back in. The shop had a ton of hours in it until he pulled the nozzle out, then we were done.

I ordered a new pump last night. I sure hope this fixes my problem, I so want to take this bike on the relay ride, but will take my bobber if I have to.

Well I got my new pump today, and I still have the same problem.

Go to Hondachopper.com and find the accelerator pump rebuild in the garage section. I used that to rebuild mine, great info.

Success! I finally got this blasted pump working! After my new pump kit failed to fix it, I decided to take the check valve apart. Low and behold the ball at bottom was stuck, so after some cleaning and reassembly it works perfectly.

I would like to say thanks to everyone who helped me out. Now I can finally put them back on and proceed with tuning, and then the best part RIDING IT!
