Sleep Number beds?
« on: January 18, 2011, 08:54:20 AM »
Wife and I are in the market for a new bed. We spend so much time laying in it that we figured we would get a good one this time. We have been looking at Sleep Numbers for a bit. For those of you that have had one or currently have one I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Are they worth the cash? Are the comfy? Good customer service? Thanks for any help.....

Very comfy. We got a foam top and the foam is going south. We got a water bed replacement set. The foam seperators settle between the air bags and the air fittings were in a bind causing leaks. The numbers don't read on the controls but the air pump still works. All in all comfortable but don't last forever and read the warranty carefully. Probably 10 years old.

We got a sleep number bed about a year ago.....It's o.k.  Ours has a wireless remote that tells you what number you are set on.  I have yet to get totally comfortable on it honestly. I frequently wake up with a back or neck ache and have yet to find my target number.  It could have to do with my pillow situation more than the bed (head too high or low).  We came from a Tempurpedic memory foam bed just before this that we both found to be too soft after a few years (regardless of what the commercial says, it does break down over time).

Ironically, I sleep better (like a baby) on the bed in the spare bedroom...that's the mattress I spent like $300 when I first got out of college and moved out on my own.  If only it were bigger....we'd use it.  Oh well.

My neighbors across the street also have a sleep number and they rave about it.  I don't know....the jury's still out for me.

Same happened here.  For me, it was nothing but a really good marketing campaign that I blew too much money on.  I never could get it set on a number that worked for me.  After a couple of years, we threw it in the trash and bought a Simmons (BeautyRest I think it was) and were quite happy with it.  After that one wore out (9-10 years) we switched to the "natural latex" mattress that we're on now.  It also has it's own set of issues.  I'm kind of wishing we would have simply gone back with another Simmons.

I think a good, moderately priced inner spring mattress is the way to go for overall comfort and cost.

We looked at those and the Tempur-pedic too when shopping for a new mattress, but we ended up buying a king size Simmons Beautyrest. Have had it for about three years now and have no regrets!
Best mattress I've ever slept on.

Slept on one for a week when on vacation a couple years ago. Neither my wife or I liked it at all and we could not get comfortable. No matter what they try to bill it as you are sleeping on an air mattress. An expensive fancy high tech air mattress maybe but still an air mattress. I always had the distinct feeling of being of rolling around on top of an inflatable pool lounger even with the padded section between my body and the air chambers.

About a decade ago we purchased a top of the line Simmons pillow top that was way too expensive for my taste at the time. Looking back now it was some of the best money I have ever spent. It is as comfortable as the day we bought it. We keep it rotated and flipped fairly often so it has not developed any uneven wear. Still feels like sleeping on a big fluffy supportive cloud every night.

I slept on a tempur-pedic once. Compared to my $200 mattress it was amazing. Never tried the sleep number though.

Slept on my sister's last year, neither my wife or myself liked it. They have good marketing though.
Just go to a couple mattress stores and "test drive" a few, you'll find one you like. They can get pricey, though.

We've had one for about 7 years.  I really like it and would buy it again tomorrow.
I've got a messed up upper back and she's got lower back issues, and we both sleep sounder (more soundly?) and wake up pain free.

Customer service pretty decent, the LCD display on the remote crapped out after 5 years, and after six we cracked part of the frame (that's right  ;)) and the pro-rated warranty covered most of it.
I recommend them to anyone I know that has spine problems.

Looked at the sleep number and the tempurpedic one.  Got the temperpedic one and love it.  It took a few weeks to get used.  My back loves me for it.  They have one that moves but that was out of my budget but so was the one I got, lol.

The wife can get in and out of bed and I do not know it.  The odd thing about the bed is you find that you do not move much at all, almost like your stuck.  My chiro said to sleep on my back as it was better for me.  This bed keeps me like that for along time.  Oh, your chiro can write a prescription for those but I think it only drops the tax which is quite a bit actually.

I know, you asked about the sleep number, sorry I got nothing on that.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I bought a Tempur-Pedic Cloud Luxe a couple months ago......LOVE IT!!

No more back or sholder pain. First time in 20 years that I dont wake up in the mornings with a screwed up back. Took a few nights to get used to it....but once you do....it's unreal how nice it is. Something I found interesting is........I can sleep for 5 hours on the tempur and it feels like i've been asleep for hours longer.

Glad I got it.

We have one.  The thing I like about it is it doesn't get warm like some of the foam style beds.  Plus there is a lot of room for adjustment.  It'll take you a while to get the right adjustment though because you'll play with it for a while.

We replaced a water bed with a Sleep Number several years ago.  With a couple cheap memory foam pads it isn't too bad.  It took some time to find out there was no really right sleep number, just one that more comfortable than all the others.  I occasionally wake up with sore hips or shoulders and used to wake with a stiff neck and headache.  A double pillow solved that though.

My "foam" style bed gets hot, I always thought it was due to my latina wife!

I guess another way to look at it too is these beds will never wear out.  Maybe the foam topper but that will be a lot cheaper than a enw bed.  You won't ever have to worry about sags or springs wearing out.
