Opinions on this bike: Suzuki GS1000E for 1800 euro.
« on: March 27, 2006, 06:01:50 AM »
Hello everybody. I've come to an ad of this bike. I know Terry is a firm believer on Suzukis. Do you think it's worth the money? What about parts availability?

If it's a shiney as it looks in the picture and the paintwork is original - I'd say 1800 euros is a reasonable price (£1200)

Don't laugh you guys - this is Europe...

A great cow pony. Mechanical parts should be available.  It's maybe a tad high for the 'States as it was never a bike to dream about- but the solid ones rarely are.  If it's for yourself, go for it. If it's for re-sale, forget it.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I've got a GS750E, Bullet proof as they say, but mines a huge lump of a bike, back when big and heavy was the way to design, Mines for sale 'cos as I've said...it's just too much weight....Can't park it facing anyway down....can't get it back off the stand, I trust the 500 would be lighter,
I Notice the bars are low, Comfort rating for these..leaning forward ?
What year?...looks about '80/82
I recon' 1800 is about right.
not in great demand only by those who want them, But solid, and a very stable ride.
Parts.....you probably won't need any.

J.C....what a pessimest am I,
If 18 is the asking, Get it for 16....IMO ...worth it.
We are not a profit making organisation, considering another re-sale value, how much are you prepared to pay for a good ride this summer  ;D

I have exchanged several mails with the owner. He seems to be a nice and reasonable guy. He is the first owner of the bike and it has been sitting for three years. Looks like he rather selll the bike to somebody who will look after it. As I'm into classic bikes, he has told me to call him anytime I have the time to go and see it, and if I like it he will try to accomodate to my budget...

Anyway, please keep those opinions coming. I've never had a classic suzuki and would like to know more about them.

Thanks in advance

Raul

GS 500twin has been around for years. was developed from the 400 and 450 twins. ( not sure where the 250 fitted in, de bored 400?) Think it was a backwards step. went from 4valve TSCC to a 2 valve design. Shim over bucket, solid as a rock as long as you keep oil in them (like all UJM's) Dont expect a racer though, 50BHP is possible but requires work, probably nearer 35bhp stock ( I'll find out)

are you asking about a 550 or a 1000 or am I going blind.
I had a GS1000EC for a few years, what a great motor. The handling was indifferent but I think most bikes of that era suffered from the same wallowing action around corners.

Now I'm confused.

The pic is a GS1000 - worth 1800 in my view.

The title suggests a GS500. Now I've heard of the Gs550 which was a 4 but as PJ says, wasn't the GS500 a twin?

Post title edited. I was talking about the GS1000E, but as you said, the GS500 has been around for some years now. It's so common that my brain just confused both.

I was talking about the bike in the picture, a GS1000E.

GS1000, fantastic understressed motor. Suzuki was last big player to get big bike ( unless the XS1100 yam came later?). They saw what everyone else did and went one better. Finish was pretty bad on a lot of them, shiney when new but  paint would wear off gas tank, (just out of warranty usually) Clutches on early models could have problems if your racing. Otherwise get it. Can get a 1428 big bore block, GSX 1100 head and about 300bhp if you want. Or keep iut stock and ride for next 30 yrs.

Beautiful Bike Raul, 145 Mph out of the box, and the best handling big Jap bike of the 1970's with better fuel economy than your CB750.

Don't worry about spare parts, they're there on your dealer's shelf covered in dust, as someone forgot to set the "use by" date for these engines, so nothing goes wrong with them.

You can't fit the 16 valve head as the cases are different, but you don't have to, throw in an 1100 kit and a set of big cams and it'll stick with modern bikes, no worries! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well, I have to concur on the paint/finish of the early model Suzuki's.

Just got a 1981 GS450L, blue and the paint is chipping off the tank everywhere.
Same with my 1972 and 1974 GT750's.

And Suzuki's idea to put plastic 'hide covers" in front of their gastanks on the L
models was just a cheap/horrible idea. BUT they do have good motors etc etc.
What's with that?

Well, thanks everybody for your advice but it is too late.

Two days ago I saw an ad for another bike I've been wanting for a long time. The price was right -exactly the same 1800 euro-, the bike was good, and now it is in my garage.

Side by side with the Suzuki, it loses in every aspect. But you now, when it comes to bikes, sometimes the best one doesn't put a smile on your face like some other less perfect. The Suzuki just came my way and I asked how was it. This other one is one I've been wanting for a long time, but was waiting for a good price.

I will open a new thread as soon as I have some pictures. Let's see if you recognize it.
