1982 cb650sc - light/electronics issue

ok quick question for anyone who might know:

my headlight sometimes works and sometimes doesn't same for my neutral indicator light. Now its stuck in the not working stage.

I replaced the bulbs thinking that was it, which it appears it wasn't

So I took a meter and tested the conenctions in the headlight bucket.  It appears the "BLUE" wire is not being supplied with juice.  The wires are secured in the blocks but I am thinking that the wire may be loose on the opposite side (in near the battery etc.)  I can't ride without the light so I'm trying to figure it out.  Any advice would be helpful.


on a sidenote: i did finally get it running enough to ride and and man am I happy:) this bike is a blast

Could be dirty/corroded connections. Might be worth going through the entire wiring harness, pull each apart, clean them then use some dielectric grease (small tube can be had at almost any auto parts store) on the connection before shoving them together. Don't forget to clean the ground connection points also.

new question:
if there were 30 amp fuses installed instead of the 15 amp ones what problems would this cause?

i think the original owner put the wrong fuses in it

Only thing I can think of would be the fuse not blowing when it should....which could burn up wiring and cook your electrics...minor stuff like that  ;)

Absolutely no problems until something goes wrong.  Then it depends on the nature of the fault.  A direct short or ground will probably blow the larger fuse nearly as fast as the lower rated ones.  However, more stress will be placed on circuit components in the process, in the form of heat.  Connector contacts, the connector plastic shrouds, and wire insulation, each have their own melting temperature or temperature withstand point without deformation.  The issue is the time these components are subjected to the increase currents and subsequent heating effects. 

However, the fuses are not only there to protect these components, but also to warn the operator that current consumption of the circuit is beyond design limits.  Unless you know that circuit end device loads have increased (Higher wattage bulbs or more of them, for example.), it is not wise to increase the fuse rating beyond original design limits.  Emergency use; okay, routine use; no.

ok slight update:

i took apart the hi/low switch and found i wasnt getting full power to there.  I swapped the fuses around and it corrected that problem BUT the power does not seem to be going through the little switch bridge and into the other wiring.  I cleaned it off and sanded the contacts with fine sand paper a touch but still no go.  any suggestions at this point?

If you want to expand input from people not familiar with your particular bike, a picture of what you are typing about might help.

Other than that, pretend you are an electron and follow the wire and connection highway from source to destination.  When you get to where the bridge is out on the road, don't forget to yell AAAAAAaaaaaa as you fall to the ground.  Then mend the bridge. ;D

In other words, electricity takes a mechanical path.  You have to find that break and close it.

TT has it... except that when you're pretending you're an electron, instead of falling off the bridge and yelling AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa, imagine you're in a traffic jam with billions of cars all bumper to bumper with drivers yelling and screaming at eachother and fightingtogettothefront, where the bridge is out.

Unless of course the connection is broken AND grounded, and then the AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa situation would be correct  ;D

Can you even imagine being a grounded electron and falling into the precipice of ultimate loneliness?  Time to go read some Douglas Adams...  I'm sure he went into it somewhere in one of his books.

got it figured out.  its probably the cheapest designed switch ive ever seen. almost tempted to hit up radioshack and replace it

I have an 82 cb650sc, The Hi/Lo seems to be the first thing the weather/dirt
   messes up.So I clean the handlebar switches every spring.{had the same problem}
    as well as the fuse holders, I believe the headlight system fuse is
     no more than a 15A I will look tonite.

I've replaced the rear brake switch with a radioshack type switch for the same reason.  Years of road dirt made it useless.
