So I just got an e-mail back from VHT. Before I painted my parts I asked them about sanding their paint, of course I already sanded the parts by the time I get their e-mail. They said you should let teh paint cure for at least 1 week, then sand them, then bake it.

I think you're doing a great job...the polishing looks terrific in the pictures.

I'm doing a surface job on my bike since it had such low miles, less than 20K.

I don't know if I could go into the detail you and some of the other folks are going into with the engine and tranny.

I lucked out and got the Hydraulic cam, shaft drive bike.

What's you're color scheme?

Well I think that they were only recommending the 7 day waiting period if you are going to sand the paint, like I did on the cylinders.

I only let mine dry for around 14 hours, then I baked it, then I sanded it... didn't work out so great. I am going to have to spray some paint into a cup and use a touch up brush to fix all the chips, I really dont feel like blasting and repainting them completely.

The odometer on this bike read 10k, but there is no way that was correct.

I am probably doing a maroon and silver/white color scheme. I have to go look at the color swatches some more.

I am still debating on what color to paint the engine cases, or if I want to paint them at all. I want to do it this week.

I soda blasted them with my little 10lb harbor freight blaster, but they still have staining that probably wouldnt come off without a very strong soda blaster or a different media.

I am a bit afraid to paint them black, since it will be super obvious if it chips. At least if I paint them silver then it would be a big deal if it chips.

Day 20

I used less paint doing all these parts then I did doing the cylinders and hubs... Not sure if that means I put too much on the cylinders, or if the cylinder fins take up more paint than you'd expect.

Well you say that now. Lets see how this motor looks in a couple years and a couple thousand miles, then i might be saying that I wish I hadn't painted it.

I'm just today catching up on your build. Looks like every things coming together as planned. Have you picked a tank/seat color scheme yet? If you lined your tank already- BCR recommends Caswell's product - how did that go?

I havent done anything with the tank yet. I order from casewell once every couple months, so I will add some sealer next time. It never even occurred to me that I had to seal the tank so its a good thing you posted here.

Those will be nice colors. Yes Caswell's liner is what BCR basically harped at me to ensure I understood he recommended Caswell and to make sure I was going to use it. If your tank is the metal tank that he also makes, I'm not sure if it's still needed. Mine is the fiberglass tank.

It is certainly a requirement for fiberglass, but I think it is just a recommendation for steel. I'll look into it some more.

I am fairly certain that I am going to replace the filler neck and fuel cap on this tank with a flush one from custom cycle engineering:

The bolt on ring is 3-3/4", I think I have enough flat space on the top of this tank to make that work.

My main, rod, and a couple other bearings are on their way from servicehonda.com. So the engine should be going back together soon. However the head is likely a ways out still since I am waiting for the new valves, hopefully they come out sooner rather than later.

I ordered that fuel cap, so I better make it work since it is rather expensive.

Frame, front fender, swingarm, etc. are at the sand blaster.

My rod bearings are on backorder, so engine re-assembly is delayed. Anyone have some green rod bearings they can sell?

Since I wont really have any bike stuff to work on this weekend I will probably work on getting the car out of storage.

Is that a metal tank that is completely covered with putty or is that some sort of heavy white primer all around the edge where you took it to bare metal?

You should, I think it is very cool looking. The only problem I foresee is trying to build a bit of a recess for it, such that you can not see the gasket when you look from the side.

So all of the bearings came in. I even got those little rubber damper things, not sure why. Any tips for re-assembly? How much assembly lube should I use, is there a limit or is more better than less? Any thing I should inspect, besides the obvious. I heard that I need to soak the transmission parts liberally with oil.

Hopefully I get to work on this tomorrow. In the process of de-winterizing my car last week I found a stream of gear oil coming from the transfer case, so it was slow going and I want to try getting that running tomorrow.

Bike looks like its coming along good. Its to bad benjie is still selling a product like that. You should not need that much filler if your doing things right.
