Group Buy of Total-Seal F2/F3 rings!
« on: February 01, 2011, 03:17:39 pm »
Hi folks,

tl;dr - I ended up paying for custom rings from Total Seal to make rings for F2/F3 CB750s. I paid nearly $1k for 5 sets of rings. As a result of tooling purchased for the effort, future sets from Total Seal will be cheaper. There may also be others available through the UK (see SOHC Digger's post).

I'm taking direct PMs if you want to buy a set; minimum price is $150/set, approximately what you'd pay from other sources. Please PM me through the board if you're interested in buying. Don't reply to this thread please.

Sets remaining available: 2

Spoke to Keith at Total-Seal today about our lovely F2/F3 bikes. He's willing to do a run of the custom 1.2 compression rings for us, with a minimum order of 36 rings. We have enough to place the order now.

I'm agreeing to coordinate a group buy for the forum. I've done business with a few of you already, and have a fairly strong web presence, so hopefully my credentials speak for themselves.

A decision needs to be reached as to the rings we order. From Keith @ Total Seal:

Quote
Due to the small bore size we are unable to coil a steel ring this small. What can be done is I can rework some cast iron rings to the 1.2mm dimension. There would be a 36 piece minimum and they would be $19.50 ea. These would be a file to fit plain rectangular cast iron part and could be used in the top & the 2nd groove. Options for these would be to apply a chrome nitride face coating to the top ring to in increase wearability this would add $15.00 per ring and would only apply to the top ring. An option for the 2nd ring would be to cut a napier step in the lower edge of the face to increase it's oil scraping ability this would add $6.00 per ring if so desired. Oil rings are $5.85 each

A little math shows that a full set of 8 rings would cost US$156, plus the oil rings at US$23.40 for a total of US$179.40 per set. The poll showed that people didn't want to pay the extra for the chroming or the napier step.

Based on feedback I am ordering 5 sets of rings - 40 1.2 F2/F3 rings + 20 matching oil rings.

The 1.5 ring set I got from Keith was about $130 shipped I think.  So I'm betting it will be a tiny bit more than that, just to feed that into here.

If I had the time and hadn't ordered an 836 kit already I'd be in.  So good luck with it.  Hope to see this come about.  I foresee owning another F2/F3 in the future.

Hi folks,

Spoke to Keith at Total-Seal today about our lovely F2/F3 bikes. He's willing to do a run of the custom 1.2 compression rings for us, with a minimum order of 64 rings. Given there's 8 per engine, that's only 8 of you that need to sign up. He further said that if we manage to get a group buy in, that they'll start stocking that size.

I'm agreeing to coordinate a group buy for the forum. I've done business with a few of you already, and have a fairly strong web presence, so hopefully my credentials speak for themselves. Once we have ~8 sets committed to, I'll be able to get a price from keith.

Please follow-up here or via PM if you want to join in on the buy!

Shoot! I needed this... I ended up having to put in an 836 kit from Dynoman for my F, because I couldn't find a full set of stock sized rings. I still hope this happens. It will be great for all F owners. Good luck!

Bump...c'mon there's got to be some F'ers out there that want to join up!

I may just end up eating it, buying 64 and selling them to others...

I would be interested.  Are these the only items needed for the complete ring job?

Hi cheapride, I'll add you to the list. Thanks for stopping by!

Other than giving your cylinders a light hone and confirming that clearances are still OK, yes, this would be for a full set of rings: the two compression rings (the custom ones) and the oil rings will be included.

This is most likely wrong but are 78K rings the same?

78k are different rings.  It is 77/78 F bikes that have these rings.

Alright, I'll bite on the condition that the rings don't come out to cost something ridiculous.

I wish I could help y'all out, but unfortunetly my F3 has a F0 motor in it right now.  Someone must have had some fun in those 5 thousand miles that are on it.

Hi everyone, I have news from Keith @ Total-Seal:

A little math shows that a full set of 8 rings would cost US$156, plus the oil rings (price TBD). Add US$60 for the chrome first ring, and US$24 for the napier step.

Please use the poll to let me know what option you'd like best.

What would the oil ring price be.  I would like to have an estimate before I commit to an option.

Thanks,

I've already asked for a price on the oil rings. We'll probably find out next week.

Keith has reponded: oil rings are US5.85 each. So here are the prices on all the options, excluding S&H:

1. Plain cast iron rings + oil rings: USD 179.40
2. Option 1 + chrome plated top ring: USD 239.40
3. Option 1 + napier step bottom ring: USD 203.40
4. Option 1 + chrome plated top ring + napier step bottom ring: USD 263.40

Discussion? I'm for option 4 myself - might as well go all the way.

Does anyone know what the originals were made with?  Would the increase oil scraping raise the oil pressure?

No, it will only decrease the amount of oil that is burnt during combustion.

I've always been a "well your already spending this much, what's a bit more going to hurt," but at this point I just can't do it. My vote is for the 179.40 set, and that's a wobbly vote as it is.

The originals were both chrome plated (top and bottom), though I don't know what material. Given the comment from Keith I expect they were probably also cast iron.

There is no napier step on the 2nd ring.

Votes/responses from anyone else? I intend to put in the order next week.

This is the first place I have found that I've found other than getting them custom made.  This is a killer price too!  Way cheaper than these prices too!
